During a recent visit to Apalachicola, we took a drive over to see St. George Island and discovered a natural, beautiful beachfront, perfect for families looking for a quiet getaway along the water.
Here’s a look at five things to do in St. George Island for families:
1. Climb Cape Saint George Lighthouse
Climb the 92 stairs to the top for a beautiful view of the island and the surrounding waterways. Built in 1852, the lighthouse has been the victim of erosion, hurricanes and even a war over the years. It was reconstructed in its current home in December 2008.
2. Take a Bike Ride
St. George Island is home to 17 miles of paved bike paths and numerous off-road trails for exploring. Jolly Rogers Beach Shop rents bikes by the hour, day and week and is located in the center of the island, so you can cruise up and down the beach.
3. Explore St. George Island State Park
Explore the undeveloped beaches of St. George Island and choose from biking, kayaking, a peaceful picnic or enjoy one of the park’s 60 campsites. The beaches feature sugary white sand and there are pavilions available for cookouts, picnics and restrooms. The park is also well known for great bird watching.
4. Dine along the waterfront
Stop by the Blue Parrot Oceanfront Café for fresh seafood, cocktails and a great view of the water.
5. Go for a boat ride
Check out Journeys of St. George Island for boat charter trips for great fishing, to rent kayaks or take your little ones out on the guided dolphin tour or sunset cruise. Seeing the area by water gives you a unique look at this relaxed island setting.
