Bonifay, about 50 miles north of Panama City Beach in Northwest Florida, is the county seat of Holmes County, where visitors can find historic landmarks, a host of outdoor recreation opportunities, charming restaurants, and family-friendly events.
In town, hungry travelers can fill up on fried fish and shrimp at Castaway Seafood, barbecue and Southern side dishes at M&W Smokehouse Barbecue, and family-style favorites at Holiday Restaurant. History buffs will want to check out the community’s historic buildings, including the two-story Mediterranean Revival-style Waits Mansion, built in the 1920s, and the 1886 Keith Cabin.
Plenty of family fun can be found in and near Bonifay, from the longstanding Northwest Florida Championship Rodeo, which takes place in Bonifay the first full weekend in October, to Vortex Spring Adventure Park, a premiere diving and swimming destination less than 30 minutes west of town. At Vortex Spring, visitors can also get scuba instruction, rent campsites, cabins, and lodges, and splash, slide, and float at the water park.
Families of all ages will want to visit Ponce de Leon Springs State Park, 20 minutes west of Bonifay, which is home to a clear freshwater spring where visitors can swim and snorkel at any time of year. The park, part of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail, also offers birding and wildlife viewing, fishing, picnicking, and light hiking. Morrison Springs, about five miles south of the state park, is one of North Florida’s most popular swimming and diving destinations.
