An hour east of Tallahassee and 15 miles south of the Florida-Georgia state line, Madison brims small-town charm, drawing visitors with a picturesque downtown full of historic buildings and unbeatable river and spring adventures just beyond the city.
With a population of fewer than 3,000 people, Madison is the county seat of Madison County and home to the Treasures of Madison County museum, a quarterly local market, the Four Freedoms Trail, and independent eateries including O’Neal’s Country Buffet and Grumpy’s Diner on Main.
Named the top swimming hole in the country by USA Today, the crystal-clear freshwater spring at Madison Blue Spring State Park, 10 miles east of the city of Madison, is a must-see for both casual swimmers and cave divers. Situated off the banks of the Withlacoochee River North, the dazzling blue spring is surrounded by lush forest and measures 25 feet deep and 82 feet wide with a shallow spring run and access to more than 26,000 feet of underwater passages that draw divers from around the world. Paddlers can also explore the scenic 28-mile Withlacoochee North Paddling Trail, which can be accessed from the state park.
More family-friendly aquatic adventures can be found at Ragans Water Zone, part of Ragans Family Campground, which features a 60-foot water slide, zero-entry swimming pool, and quarter-mile lazy river. At Suwannee River State Park in nearby Live Oak, 25 minutes east of Madison, visitors can fish, camp, hike, bike, and paddle the Withlacoochee and Suwannee rivers.
