Big Pine Key
Situated between Marathon and Key West, Big Pine Key is a nature-lover’s dream island getaway, offering family-friendly beaches and parks, access to world-class diving and snorkeling, and laid-back restaurants serving fresh seafood and spectacular views.
Big Pine Key is part of the Lower Keys, which includes Summerland Key, Big Torch Key, Little Torch Key, Cudjoe Key, Sugarloaf Key, Big Coppitt Key, and Stock Island, and is home to Bahia Honda State Park, one of Florida’s most beloved parks where visitors can camp beside the clear, turquoise water. Bahia Honda offers three beaches — Loggerhead Beach, Calusa Beach, and Sandspur Beach — as well as accessible amenities, campgrounds, cabins, concessions, and a boat ramp. The long list of popular water-based activities at Bahia Honda includes snorkeling, either from shore or by tour boat. More saltwater fun can be found on the beach at ADA-accessible Veterans Memorial Park on nearby Little Duck Key.
Big Pine Key is also home to the visitor center of the National Key Deer Refuge, which spans 100 miles and is home to dozens of endangered and threatened species, including the endangered Key deer, a tiny subspecies of white-tailed deer that can be found roaming the island. After a full day of exploring by land and water, the restaurants of the Lower Keys offer relaxation and fresh island eats. No Name Pub, a Pine Key landmark since the 1930s, and the Square Grouper Bar & Grill on Cudjoe Key are a few local favorites.
There’s no shortage of unique and interesting places to stay on Big Pine Key, from the campground at Bahia Honda and RV spaces and luxury travel trailer rentals at Big Pine Key Resort to the oceanside boutique-style inn Deer Run on the Atlantic and beautiful lodgings at Barnacle Bed and Breakfast.
