High Springs
Known as the “Gateway to the Springs,” High Springs, about 30 minutes northwest of Gainesville in North Central Florida, is a place where visitors can find Old-Florida charm and epic outdoor adventures. From scuba and cave diving in crystal-clear freshwater springs and exploring state parks to visiting quaint downtown shops and restaurants, High Springs has something for everyone.
The area’s many springs entice experienced divers and families with young children alike with excellent visibility and 72-degree temperatures year round. Families will enjoy splashing the day away at Ruth B. Kirby Gilchrist Blue Springs State Park and Poe Springs Park. At Ginnie Springs, a renowned scuba diving and cave diving destination, casual visitors can swim and snorkel in the gin-clear springs, and certified divers and cave divers can experience The Ginnie Ballroom and other dive sites.
To explore beyond the springs, rent a canoe or kayak and paddle the Santa Fe River and go tubing on the Santa Fe or Ichetucknee River. Do some fishing at River Rise Preserve State Park, hike or bike the more than 35 miles of trails there, and visit O’Leno State Park, which offers hiking and biking trails, 61 campsites, canoe and kayak launches, and a museum and interpretive exhibit that teaches visitors about the park’s history.
Downtown, check out the antique shops and popular eateries such as The Great Outdoors Restaurant, a longtime local favorite offering fresh dishes made with locally-sourced ingredients. To sample local craft beer, stop in at High Springs Brewing Company, part of the Sippin’ Seven Alachua County Ale Trail.
