Micanopy
Micanopy, just 10 miles south of the hustle and bustle of Gainesville, is quintessential Old Florida, a small town where magnificent live oak trees draped in Spanish moss line the main street and visitors can ease into a slower pace of life.
Although the town has fewer than 1,000 residents, weekends see visitors flocking to the historic storefronts of Cholokka Boulevard, the main road and center of activity, to explore the quaint stores, antique shops, and eateries there.
Shop for antiques at Antique City Mall, Wren Wood Antiques, Delectable Collectibles, and Dakota Mercantile, sought-after Florida Highwaymen paintings at Micanopy Outpost, art, treasures, and gifts at JEMsOriginals, and vintage and modern home decor and art at The Shop in Micanopy. Sweet treats, delicious deli foods, and more tasty offerings can be found at the restaurants along Cholokka Boulevard and beyond. Coffee N’ Cream, Old Florida Cafe, Pearl Country Store & Barbecue, Blue Highway Pizzeria, and Mosswood Farm Store and Bake House are all popular choices.
Visitors can learn about Micanopy’s 200-year history by visiting the Micanopy Historical Society Museum and Micanopy Historic Cemetery, and booking a stay at the circa-1845 Herlong Mansion Bed & Breakfast, also located on Cholokka Boulevard. Head just outside the downtown area to find the short and easy hiking trails at Native American Heritage Preserve and Tuscawilla Preserve.
Venture north to explore Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park, which offers the rare chance to spot bison and wild horses that roam there, and Barr Hammock Preserve, both in Micanopy. Head 10 miles east of Micanopy to Cross Creek and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park, where visitors can explore the Cracker-style home and 1930s-era farm that belonged to the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of “The Yearling,” and eat at The Yearling Restaurant nearby.
