Dunnellon
Situated along some of Florida’s most beloved rivers, Dunnellon, about an hour south of Gainesville, is a paddler’s paradise, where visitors can find laid-back waterfront restaurants and plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation, both on and off the water.
In the summertime, tubing the spring-fed Rainbow River is a time-honored tradition enjoyed by locals and visitors alike, and swimmers can splash in the crystal-clear, first-magnitude headsprings 365 days a year at Rainbow Springs State Park, which also features lush gardens and manmade waterfalls. The six-mile-long Rainbow River, known for clear water and abundant fishing, boating, and wildlife viewing opportunities, runs into the Withlacoochee River in Dunnellon, which draws in anglers with populations of catfish, Redear sunfish, Largemouth bass, and bluegill.
Although many visitors come for the water, there is plenty to do on land, from hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian activities at Ross Prairie Trailhead and Campground to biking the 47-mile paved Withlacoochee State Trail.
Dunnellon’s most popular restaurants can be found downtown and on the river. The Blue Gator Tiki Bar & Restaurant and Swampy’s Bar & Grille offer delicious seafood and scenic views of the water, and Breakfast Station serves hearty breakfast and lunch plates to fuel a busy day of river adventures. At Dunnellon’s Historic Village, visitors can find quaint cafes and shops selling antiques, home decor, and more.
