Suwannee
Located at the southern tip of Dixie County in North Central Florida where the Suwannee River meets the Gulf of Mexico, the tranquil fishing village of Suwannee is known for excellent freshwater and saltwater fishing, boating, and unspoiled natural landscapes.
Suwannee’s marinas and fishing guides ensure anglers have everything needed for a successful day on the water, and Gateway Marina also offers houseboat rentals for the ultimate coastal getaway. At Bill’s Fish Camp and Motel, which is adjacent to the public boat ramp at Anderson’s Landing, guests can camp or stay at the motel and stock up at the bait and tackle shop. In addition to being a full-service marina, Suwannee Marina is a popular eatery serving rotating lunch specials and Saturday night barbecue. At Salt Creek Restaurant, guests can order from the menu of surf and turf or have their own fresh catch cooked right there.
The 246-mile Suwannee River is where paddlers can explore the Suwannee River Wilderness Trail, which ends in Suwannee at Anderson’s Landing and begins in White Springs. On land, visitors can experience the area’s vast nature preserves, including the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge. For overland enthusiasts, driving the graded Dixie Mainline Trail, which runs through the refuge, is a must.
Families of all ages will want to visit Fanning Springs State Park, a 30-minute drive north of Suwannee, to swim or scuba dive in the clear springs, hike the short nature trail, and paddle the river. Seven miles downriver of Fanning Springs, Manatee Springs State Park is another family favorite, offering similar activities in addition to eight miles of wooded, off-road bike trails.
