Coconut Grove
Bohemian vibes, Bahamian roots, beautiful scenery: Miami’s oldest neighborhood and sailing capital, Coconut Grove exudes tropical charm with lush gardens, waterfront parks, open-air shopping and dining, and a vibrant arts scene that includes the three-day Coconut Grove Arts Festival.
Coconut Grove’s iconic gardens and parks can be found along the Biscayne Bay coastline. Visitors can feed their inner plant explorer at The Kampong, an active plant research and education center where heritage crops and rare and native plant species live. Vizcaya Museum & Gardens features a historic, Mediterranean-style mansion that overlooks the bay, as well as European-style gardens whose collections include endangered orchids and lilies.
The affluent community’s deep roots are evident in its Little Bahamas neighborhood, where immigrants from the Bahamas settled in the 1870s. Today, the area’s Black heritage is celebrated and preserved in historic sites and landmarks, such as Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, Coconut Grove Cemetery, Colored Library (Odd Fellows Hall), and The Mariah Brown House, which belonged to one of the first Bahamians to settle in present-day Coconut Grove.
Many points of interest can be found on the Coconut Grove Walking Tour, including The Barnacle Historic State Park, home to Miami-Dade County’s oldest building still remaining in its original location, and CocoWalk, Coconut Grove’s famous open-air shopping and dining hub. The beautifully lush Mayfair House Hotel & Garden, a two-Michelin-key hotel described as “a sensual Eden with an artist’s heart and provocative spirit,” is just a few minutes’ walk from CocoWalk.
