St. George Island
With glistening turquoise water, miles of uncrowded white-sand beaches, and no high-rises in sight, it’s easy to see why St. George Island, just off the coast of Apalachicola in the Florida Panhandle, consistently ranks among the top beach destinations in the state and country.
At more than 20 miles long and a mile wide, this barrier island is the place to go for family-friendly outdoor adventures. Families of all ages will enjoy the island’s 17 miles of paved bike paths and a visit to Cape St. George Light Museum & Gift Shop. The pristine dunes and undeveloped beach at Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park — named the No. 1 Beach in America by Dr. Beach — are a must-see. Visitors can play on the sand, swim, and explore by bike, kayak, or paddleboard.
St. George Island offers visitors ample opportunities to see wildlife, including sea turtles and an abundance of bird species. Anglers can fish from the shore, pier, or flats, do some offshore fishing for cobia, snapper, amberjack, sea bass, mahi-mahi, or grouper, or head out on the bay in pursuit of sheepshead, speckled trout, redfish, and flounder — with or without the help of local fishing guides and charters.
The island is also known as a pet-friendly destination where four-legged family members are welcome to visit the dog-friendly beach, restaurants, and attractions. When it comes to dining on the island, visitors can choose from oceanside eateries serving fresh coastal cuisine, pub fare, barbecue, pizza, and more.
