Cabbage Key
The 100-acre island of Cabbage Key, located south of Boca Grande and west of Fort Myers, is a hidden gem of Southwest Florida. The largely undeveloped island, home to a historic inn, restaurant, and rental cottages, has no traffic or paved roads and is only accessible by boat, making it a perfect place to get away from it all.
Though privately owned, the island welcomes visitors and can be reached via a number of tour boat and water taxi operators, including Captiva Cruises in Captiva and Emmy Girl Charters in Bokeelia.
The Historic Cabbage Key Inn, built on top of a Calusa shell midden, features six remodeled rooms that have retained a classic Old-Florida feel, and there are six unique rental cottages of varying sizes where guests can enjoy the tranquility of the island and experience part of its history. Visitors and overnight guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and drinks at Cabbage Key’s renowned open-air restaurant, which is thought to have inspired the Jimmy Buffett song “Cheeseburger in Paradise.”
The waters surrounding Cabbage Key are known for excellent fishing, and the island hosts fishing tournaments throughout the year. Nearby Cayo Costa, just west of Cabbage Key, offers miles of unspoiled shoreline for swimming, snorkeling, and more.
