Perdido Key
Perdido Key, situated at the far northwestern edge of Florida 30 minutes west of Pensacola, is a barrier island with pristine, white-sand beaches, calm, turquoise waters, and estuaries and wetlands teeming with wildlife. Perdido — Spanish for “lost” — lives up to its name, offering visitors a calm coastal escape for scuba diving and snorkeling, paddling, birding, exploring wetlands, spotting rare plants and animals, and spending time on the beach.
Along the island’s southern shore, miles of family-friendly beaches await at several public beach access points. Johnson Beach, located within Gulf Islands National Seashore, has long stretches of protected beach to explore, and at Perdido Key State Park, visitors can find accessible amenities and endless fun in the sun and water, from surf fishing for redfish and pompano to spotting sea turtles and other threatened and endangered species.
Scuba divers have plenty of interesting places to explore in the clear waters surrounding Perdido Key and Pensacola, and snorkelers can reach Perdido Key Snorkeling Reef just 300 feet from the public beach. More must-see parks in the area include 18-acre Garcon Bayou Nature Park, 4,000-acre Tarkiln Bayou Preserve State Park, home to the 100 rare plants and animal species, and Big Lagoon State Park, which offers fishing, camping, hiking, and access to the start of the 1,515-mile Florida Circumnavigational Saltwater Paddling Trail as well as the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail.
Off the water, culinary adventures, scenic views, and live music can be found at the bars and restaurants of Perdido Key. The Crab Trap, The Jellyfish, and Salty Pearl Raw Bar are all popular spots to find fresh seafood.
