While Florida’s Seminole Reservations are rightly famed for the six glittering casinos they encompass - gaming paradises packed with slot machines, table games like blackjack and baccarat, and live action poker- they promise an array of other adventures and experiences, too.
You can spend the night at the beyond-swanky AAA Four Diamond-rated Guitar Hotel, an epic, 450-tall masterpiece fashioned to look like back-to-back guitars, or explore the Smithsonian-affiliated Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum, complete with a one-mile-long elevated boardwalk that twists amid a stunning 60-acre cypress dome with stops at a Seminole village, ceremonial grounds and hunting camp.
Here's how to discover the only-in-the Sunshine-State offerings of Florida’s Seminole Reservations.
BIG CYPRESS RESERVATION
Far off the beaten path, 45 minutes south of Clewiston, you’ll find the Big Cypress Reservation, a remote, 82-square-mile tract of land, the largest of six Indian reservations owned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida.
Among Florida’s tourist destinations, the Big Cypress reservation is unlike any other. Its estimated 3,800 tribal members are resolutely dedicated to sustaining the culture and heritage of their past. Here, friends greet one another in the traditional Miccosukee language; women cook ‘fry bread’ and prepare gar and deer over an open flame; and experiences for visitors aren’t virtual reality- they’re actual reality.
Check out some things to do at Big Cypress Reservation.
Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum
In the language of the Seminole’s, Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki means a place to learn, a place to remember, and the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum is exactly that. Designed as an educational instrument for tribal members as well as the non-Seminole community, it provides a smart first stop on Big Cypress. It tells the story of the justifiably proud tribe with the haunting film, ‘We Seminoles,’ and includes accurate displays of how this people hunted - and how they were hunted. It shows the ways the tribe fixed meals, constructed clothing, and how they traveled, traded, worshipped and celebrated.
And it immerses you in the tribe’s heritage. A boardwalk drifts through the Everglades, encircling a cypress dome, leading you to a reconstructed village with modern Seminole artists offering rare crafts and art; a hunting camp showcases the pelts, plumes and hides that were used and traded by the Seminoles; a Clan Pavilion lends insight about the eight clan panels, each symbolizing one of the current Seminole clans: Panther, Wind, Bird, Otter, Bear, Snake, Big Town, and Deer; and a Ceremonial Grounds invites you to kick back and rest your feet. The research center displays artifacts both wonderful and woeful; such as the 19th Century manifest of tribe members being shipped to Oklahoma. Remember, this isn’t fiction – this is the story of a people and its culture that existed long before Florida became a state. 34725 West Boundary Road, Clewiston; (877) 902-1113

It features paved RV sites with full hook-ups as well as air-conditioned cabins. It’s hardly roughing it; the resort promises a clubhouse, general store, heated swimming pool, miniature golf, basketball court, shuffle board, laundry facilities and horseshoes. The RV sites are pet friendly. 30290 Josie Billie Hwy, PMB 1002, Clewiston; (800) 437-4102 or (863) 983-1330
