Friends, I've said it before and I'll say it again, the Withlacoochee River (South) is one of Central Florida's best-kept secrets. Ancient Bald Cypress trees line the black waters of the Withlacoochee State Trail, while Limpkins make mysterious cries in the distance. In some places, you feel a million miles away from anywhere.

Truth be told, it's not a million miles from anywhere, and I grew up very near the spot where I took this panorama. Hog Island is located between Bushnell and Nobleton on the Sumter and Hernando County line. Today, it's still a pretty wild place, but it's starting to catch on as the new hot paddling place in the area.

If you haven't made it out to Hog Island Recreation Area, do so. There's a good campground with showers and electric hookups, so you aren't going to spend a few days completely off the grid. Cellular service is spotty, but mostly usable. Just a few steps away is the Hog Island boat ramp, nature trail and a section of the Florida National Scenic Trail. You've got lots to do.

Take a spin around the panorama, and you'll see a small sample of what attracts people to Hog Island, Florida. When you are ready to start planning out your trip, check out this link.
