Q. What is the water like?
A. Atlantic beaches tend to have more waves than the Gulf. Conditions change daily, and rip currents can occur even when the ocean appears calm.
Check the beach warning flags flying at the lifeguard stand and follow the guards' direction. If you're caught in a rip current, swim parallel to shore until the pull releases rather than fighting straight back in, and raise an arm to signal a guard. Call 911 in an emergency. Jellyfish and Portuguese man o' war sometimes wash ashore with the wind and currents. If stung, get out of the water, rinse the affected area with seawater rather than fresh water, and carefully remove any remaining tentacles with tweezers. Seek medical attention for severe or persistent symptoms, and call 911 for difficulty breathing, chest pain or other signs of a serious reaction.

A. Free public parking is available at Humiston Beach Park and in designated spaces along Ocean Drive. Because the park is next to the beachside shopping and dining district, spaces can fill quickly, especially on weekends and during the winter visitor season.

South along the coast, Round Island Oceanside Park has a lagoon side as well as an ocean side. The Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge runs north of Vero Beach and is one of the most significant sea turtle nesting stretches in the Western Hemisphere.

A. Winter is comfortable here and the water stays usable, which is why it's the busy season along Ocean Drive. Ocean temperatures off this coast sit in the low 70s in January and February, cool enough to notice on the way in but swimmable for most people.
Summer is hot and humid with afternoon thunderstorms that usually pass through and clear, and the ocean is at its warmest. Spring and fall sit between the two, with warm water and milder air.
Q. What about sea turtles?
A. Nesting season in Indian River County runs March 1 through Oct. 31. Note that the window differs by county on this coast: St. Lucie County to the south runs March 1 through Nov. 15, so if you're moving between them, check which rules apply.
This is serious nesting habitat. Leave nests and their markers alone. Fill in holes and knock down sandcastles before you go, because either can trap a hatchling, and take chairs, umbrellas and tents off the sand overnight. Don't use flashlights or flash photography near nesting turtles or hatchlings.
During sea turtle nesting season, beachfront lighting must be controlled so it doesn't directly or indirectly illuminate the beach. Turtle-friendly fixtures generally use low-intensity amber or red light, are mounted low and shielded from the shore, but the color alone doesn't make a fixture compliant. Vero Beach has its own sea turtle lighting ordinance, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission publishes information about local requirements.
