Vibe
Quiet and serene, with gorgeous dunes and no high rises to block the landscape, historic Butler Beach was a major player in the struggle for civil rights in the 1960s. Just drive to a spot that takes your fancy and park: you’ll have plenty of room to spread out your beach towel. Family-friendly and relaxed, it’s a stretch of shoreline where surfers play on the waves, fishermen cast into the surf, and leashed dogs frolic on the shore.
See, feel
Smooth and hardpacked close to the water, the latte-hued sand makes for a wonderful walk or a paddle on a beach cruiser. The dunes are impressive, and home to the endangered Anastasia Island Beach Mouse and the gopher tortoise. It’s the Atlantic, so expect some waves, which will vary depending on tides, the wind, and offshore systems.
On or near the beach
Swimming, surfing, skimboarding, surf fishing and biking are popular ways to enjoy the abundant sunshine. If you need help hanging ten, St. Augustine Surf School features lessons and camps.
Accessibility
You can drive on the beach, so it’s easy to get your gear out to the shore. To reserve a free beach wheelchair from St. John’s County to use for up to seven days, call (904) 209-0331 several days in advance and they’ll deliver a chair for you. The wheelchairs are popular, so plan ahead.
