ANNUAL FIRST DAY HIKE — Start the New Year on the right foot, or both feet. Most of the state parks are offering ranger-led walks through Florida’s most gorgeous places. This one at Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings State Park sounds fab.  A park ranger leads participants to The Yearling author’s favorite haunts while reading excerpts of her writing about nature and her experience living in Cross Creek. The walk concludes with a tour of the historic house.

ANNUAL ICHE NIPPY DIPPY DIP DAY — Polar bear plunge? Not so much in Florida, especially if the plunge occurs in one of the state’s beautiful blue springs where the water is always 72 degrees. At Ichetucknee Springs on the second day of the year, they call it the “nippy dip.” Also, free giveaways, hot chocolate and coffee.

ANNUAL TOUR DE FELASCO — Mountain biking in Florida? Yes, although participants in this 50-mile, ecotour ride won’t be scaling ferocious terrain like in the Tennessee Smokies. Instead, they’ll be tackling rolling hills, short climbs, sinkholes, creek crossings and log bridges through the most scenic views in North Central Florida.  A light breakfast and post-ride pizza party is provided. ANNUAL HOGGETOWN MEDIEVAL FAIRE — Pledge your loyalty by wearing your team’s colors, choose sides during the life-size game of living chess featuring medieval heroes at battle and test your skills in games of chance. ST. AUGUSTINE FILM FESTIVAL — Cinephiles will have a full slate of entertainment and will have to pick and choose wisely between showings of more than 30 independent films. BATTLE OF OLUSTEE REENACTMENT AND ANNUAL OLUSTEE FESTIVAL — Practice your oh-so-Southern drawl for a weekend full of tributes to days gone in Lake City. CUMMER GARDEN MONTH Jacksonville’s fine arts museum is revered as much for its permanent collection as it is for the gorgeous gardens originally constructed by premiere landscape architects for the Cummer family. SHELL POINT HOLIDAY CART PARADE — Residents of Shell Point go to great lengths to trick out their golf carts for this parade. Let your imagination run wild because the entrants sure do, like a golf cart disguised as a fishing boat.

ZOOLIGHTS — Thousands of LED lights will transform the Jacksonville Zoo into a winter wonderland complete with moving sculptures, a fairy village, marshmallow roasting and warm weather “ice” skating. For once the usual stars of the show, the zoo’s animal inhabitants (alligators, tigers and jaguars), take a back seat to spectacular forest of multi-colored fairy lights.

HOLIDAY PARADES, BY SEA — The sparkling reflections of colorful lights dancing on the surface of the waves is just one of the reasons lighted holiday boat parades are de rigeur along the coast. Take in the sights at Carrabelle’s Holiday on the Harbor & Boat Parade of Lights and Destin’s Annual Holiday on the Harbor Destin Lighted Boat Parade & Fireworks on back-to-back days. Both events conclude with a fireworks extravaganza.
