BEACH VROOOOOM-A-THONS! – Look! Up in the sky! It’s not Superman! It’s not a bird! It will be planes – the military kind – at two SoFla air shows in May:

• HYUNDAI AIR & SEA SHOW – Also known as A National Salute to America’s Heroes, it honors and showcases the men, women, technology and equipment from all five branches of the United States Military and police, firefighters and their first responder agencies. The in-the-air events are spectacular, with the Air Force providing most of the action (the F-35 Lightning II, a B-52 Bomber, the F-16 Fighting Falcon and the  A-10 Thunderbolt, just to name a few). But wait, there’s more: offshore powerboat racing, extreme water sports, a kids zone (with bungee jumping and a rock-climbing wall), a huge food court and the FPL Display village. The latter is a five-block long interactive experience featuring military and training equipment, motocross performances and boxing exhibitions. Following the air & sea show on the first day there will be the Music Explosion, featuring a DJ, the US. Army’s “As You Were” band, the US. Air Force Drill team, the Miami Beach Classical Music Festival Orchestra and a national music act still to be named. When day gives way tonight, there will be a 3D mapping projection illuminating Ocean Drive’s iconic buildings. The first-day show will end with a night-pyro demonstration by the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team kicking off a fireworks extravaganza. There are several VIP packages to consider.

THE MESSI EXPERIENCE – Messi, Messi, Messi! Literally, it’s all about soccer legend Lionel (although almost nobody uses his first name) Messi. This multimedia exhibit that takes a deep dive into his life and career kicks off a world tour in South Florida. It has nine thematic installations that feature state of the art technology, such as 360-degree mapping, 3D and AI. Fans can speak with Messi using AI, take a selfie with a virtual Messi and get a taste of training like him.

OCEAN BREWS & BLUES BEER FEST – Spend a day at the beach and sample an assortment of more than 100 beers form some of America’s finest craft breweries while listening to a variety of blues performers and bands. Lots of good food will be on hand, as will arts and crafts vendors.

DOWNTOWN DELRAY BEACH MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND CRAFT FESTIVAL – If you haven’t been to this bustling but pretty city, this would be a good time to go. Paintings, jewelry, glass work and pottery are just few of the kinds of things you will be able to explore and purchase. It also includes a Green Market with gourmet sauces, handmade soaps and orchids.

HAITIAN HERITAGE MONTH – Pompano Beach, just north of Fort Lauderdale, has become a happening, diverse city and continues that tradition with a month-long series of events for Haitian Heritage Month. Featured will be art, poetry, films, music and dance. More specific information about the programs and performers will be coming as the events get closer.

THE HOME & DESIGN REMODELING SHOW – Every year, this show always features the latest trends and brands in the home improvement industry. Here are just some of the areas that will be covered: kitchen and bathroom remodeling, custom closets, flooring and other surfaces, artificial turf, landscaping, patio design, outdoor kitchens and pergolas, impact windows and doors, smart homes technology and security, furniture, mattresses, solar energy solutions and roofing and gutters. There will be hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of projects to check out.

MOSAIC IN THE PALM BEACHES – Enjoy a month-long celebration of shows, art, ideas and culture at some of Palm Beach County’s best attractions and museums at discounted prices. SWEETHEAT MIAMI – A popular Pride celebration that was created by women for women, Sweetheat Miami consists of a week’s worth of pool parties, speed dating, nightlife parties, DJs, live music and dancing. Women from all over the world attend this gathering, which is expected to attract about 40,000 people.

REDLAND INTERNATIONAL ORCHID FESTIVAL – It will feature more than 50 booths of educational exhibits and vendors exhibiting an array of orchid species and hybrids. Learn about orchid caretaking through grower demonstrations and lectures. Watch as vendors and exhibitors vie for titles in an event judged by the American Orchid Society. There will also be international food for purchase. Everyone who buys a ticket in advance is automatically entered in one of two raffles. A second opportunity to enter is given to everyone who buys a ticket at the gate and fills out a raffle ticket. You could be the winner of scores of orchid plants, crafts and supplies.

TIDAL COVE WATERPARK CELEBRATION – Join Tidal Cove Miami Waterpark’s five-year celebration, in partnership with iHeart Radio, Vacation Sunscreen, Hampton Water Rose, and Ketel One Botanical Gin, at its five-acre property, including seven separate water slides, lazy river, day-of food and drink specials, upgraded cabanas, and on-site dining. Catch celebrity DJ Drew (Y100) and Big1059's DJ Amelia as they spin music for attendees, and broadcast live from the waterpark.

CORALPALOOZA – Looking for an eco-vacation? This one fills the bill. You’ll have a great time and do a lot of good at the same time. The Coral Restoration Foundation is hosting a day dedicated to promoting awareness and preserving the third largest coral reef on earth. Activities will range from helping shore up coral tree nurseries, monitoring existing colonies and out-planting threatened species of corals.  Note: You must be dive-certified to participate.  Reservations are already underway and spots fill up quickly, so don’t hesitate if you want to participate.

EVERYTHING IS A SPIRAL – 17 Miami-based resident artists explore the concept of time as an ever-evolving coil, where the present is layered with multiple pasts and possible futures. The artists use mediums such as sculpture, painting, collage, photography, textile and digital to interpret their takes on the theme for this exhibit.

ART IN THE GARDEN – A beautiful botanical garden features local art and sculptures that convey a sense of nature using only natural, recycled and/or repurposed materials. They can range from the very small to the very large and are built to withstand high winds and heavy rains. If you haven’t yet visited this beautiful botanical garden, now would be a good time to go.

SOUTHERN FRIED POETRY SLAM – This is an annual performing arts festival that celebrates poetry, the spoken-word and community outreach. It was started in 1993 and each year a different city is the host. This year it will be held right here in SoFla. Through a sense of family and good old Southern home-cooked meals, it shares some of the South’s time-honored traditions, such as hospitality, grace and comfort. It’s also a tournament. Some 200 poets, orators and writers will compete for cash and prizes.

AMERICAN BLACK FILM FESTIVAL – It is dedicated to empowering Black talent by providing a platform for up-and-coming artists and entertainment content by and about people of African descent. There will be five days of screenings, master classes, talent showcases, parties and a variety of networking events. Screenings will include a Hollywood release along with studio premieres and independent films.When: June 12-16 followed by a virtual streaming segment from June 17-24

CHILDHOOD CLASSICS: 100 YEARS OF CHILDREN’S BOOK ILLUSTRATION – Your kids will love it and so will you. And, actually, it’s a little more than 100 years, covering illustrations and illustrators from the early 20^th century pen and ink drawings by Sarah Nobles Ives right up to modern digital creations like those by Moe Willems. Attendees will see original artworks from Dr. Seuss, Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are and Garth Williams Stuart Little, along with contributions from illustrators such as Rosemary Wells, Richard Scarry, Chris Van Allsburg and Hillary Knight. Much-loved characters like Babar, Eloise and Cat in the Hat will mesmerize family members of all ages.

I LOVE STOCK ISLAND FESTIVAL – Right before you get to Key West, you have to go through Stock Island, a community that tends to be residential in character with a year-round population. It is home to a thriving artist community and lots of friendly folks. You might want to put this five-day festival on your to-see list. Here are some of the events that have taken place over the years: a food truck tour, “dive-in” movie (watch while soaking or floating in a pool), an art stroll open house, a taste of Stock Island food tour, a farmers market, lots of live music, a Stock Island history tour, an authentic Cuban pig roast and beach party, a family day (with archery, horse shoes face painting, animal feeding and a picnic lunch), a Father’s Day fish fry and beach party and a Father’s Day fishing derby.

FOUNDER’S DAY AT WHITEHALL – Once a year, you can gain access to one of Florida’s great museums for free. Founder’s Day is in honor of the Flagler Museum’s founder, Jean Flagler Matthews, who rescued the estate from demolition and established the museum on June 5, 1959.  Whitehall’s first and second floors will be open, as will Henry Flagler’s personal Railcar 91on the Flagler Kenan Pavilion.

LGBTQ PRIDE MONTH EVENTS – The Stonewall Riots, also called the Stonewall Uprising, began in the early hours of June 28, 1969, when New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club located in Greenwich Village. The raid sparked a riot among bar patrons and neighborhood residents as police hauled employees and patrons out of the bar, leading to six days of protests and violent clashes with law enforcement. In recognitions of that, June has been designated LGBTQ Pride Month. Here are some of the events in South Florida:

• Wilton Manors Stonewall Pride Street festival & Parade –It’s a one-day blast with live music, a marketplace featuring vendors selling arts & crafts, food trucks and a kids zone. The highlight of the event is the float-laden parade in the evening. Some 50,000 people are expected to attend.

• Key West Pride – The festival typically includes pool parties at guest houses and emporiums, drag shows, a street fair and parade on Duval Street, nighttime soirees at local clubs, a burlesque show and a lively “Rainbow Roast.” Other events this year include wine tasting, snorkeling, a bartender competition and a ’70s retro disco party.

• Naples Pride – It celebrates diversity and unity, educates the community on LGBTQ issues to promote equal rights for all. It’s an all-inclusive family-friendly event that is open to everybody and will feature entertainers, speakers, musicians, performers, vendors, exhibitors, activities for kids and food and drink.

CAPTIVAVILLE SONGWRITERS WEEKEND – It will be 72 hours of sun, fun, live music and one of the biggest pool parties of the year on Captiva Island. In the past, the music tended to be mostly country, but as of press time there were no details on the number of bands or what kind of music will be featured this year. Check the web site below closer to the event for more details.

COLLEGE OF THE FLORIDA KEYS SWIM AROUND KEY WEST – If you are up for an in-the-water-athletic-type vacation, you might want to try the 12.5-mile swim around Key West. The Atlantic Ocean water is pristine and you can see fish, coral and maybe even some turtles if you look close enough. Dolphins may even try to join in, too. If you don’t want to swim that many miles, there are smaller races – 6.1 miles, 2 miles, 1 mile and 800 yards.
When: The main swims are on June 8, but also events on June 7 and June 9.

PARAISO MIAMI SWIM WEEK – This three-day event showcases the best in swimsuit fashion, wellness and beauty and lifestyle brands. In addition to runway shows, there will be concerts, cocktail parties, fitness and wellness programs and talks and panel discussions featuring industry pros.

DOWNTOWN VENICE CRAFT FESTIVAL – Crafters from across the nation will showcase their creations in a variety of media, including stained glass, photography and personal products, including some for children and pets. While you are there, take a walk through the Green Market, which features plants, handmade soaps, BBQ sauces and live orchids.

HALFWAY TO CHRISTMAS CRAFT FAIR – If you are one of those folks who likes to get an early start on the ho-ho-ho season, this one is for you. It features Christmas lights, music, inflatable displays and decorations. You’ll find fine art, jewelry, handcrafted items, clothing, baked goods, chocolates, unique gifts, soaps and candles. There will be hourly door prizes and the forecast is for some snow, in the form of artificial flurries.

ORLANDO INTERNATIONAL FRINGE THEATRE FESTIVAL – This 14-day arts festival is one of Orlando’s most unique and inclusive cultural events, offering hundreds of un-juried, uncensored, and highly talented theatre, music, dance performances and artist displays of all genres, as well as a free outdoor music festival, food and drinks. Kids Fringe for children and families also returns, as well as Fringers of the Future for teens, bringing entertaining performances by young artists, along with workshops, hands-on art activities and more.

THUNDER ON COCOA BEACH – This exciting, four-day offshore boat racing event brings some of the world’s fastest speedboats and lots of adrenaline to the shores of the Space Coast, creating some serious buzz in the Atlantic Ocean. Enjoy live entertainment, parties and some of the top race teams in the world competing in various classes, with Class 1 reaching speeds over 175 miles per hour. After each day’s races, meet the racers at the downtown Cocoa Beach block party or dance the night away at the after-parties.

ORLANDO CARNIVAL DOWNTOWN – Continuing its run of more than three decades, the multicultural Orlando Carnival Downtown returns, celebrating Caribbean life and customs with an entire weekend of brilliantly colored, feather- and sequin-adorned costumes, dancing, rhythmic music, spicy dishes and cocktails. This year’s celebration begins with a special Sunrise & Shades brunch party, followed by various dance and music parties, reggae shows, art vendor fairs and delicious foods from Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica, Guyana, Barbados and other Caribbean nations.

SUNSHINE GET DOWN – Set in the 80-acre wooded retreat of Florida Sand Music Ranch (formerly Sertoma Youth Ranch), the Sunshine Get Down festival returns for a second year, bringing more than two dozen bands over three days performing original southern rock, ska and bluegrass, as well as tribute bands playing Pink Floyd, Phish, the Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead and Led Zeppelin. Bring camping gear, RVs and vans for a weekend of relaxing entertainment, as well as morning yoga, a shopping village with handmade goods and artwork and lots of food and dessert trucks.

17^th ANNUAL HURRICANE PARTY MUSIC FESTIVAL – Since launching in 2006, this Annual Hurricane Party has grown each year, now featuring seven stages and more than 50 bands along the streets of Historic Downtown Sanford. Check out live art demonstrations, shopping and public service vendors and food trucks while paying homage to Mother Nature in hopes of a tranquil hurricane season, which follows in June. The downtown area is also the site of many award-winning restaurants, breweries, ghost tours, a marina and other activities that can fill a whole weekend for visitors.

UPTOWN MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL – The sweet sounds of contemporary jazz and R&B fill the air in a beautiful downtown Tampa park, putting a spotlight on the area’s rich and diverse music and arts scene. Musical acts include Eric Darius, Adam Hawley, Jose Valentino Ruiz, DW3, and many other chart-topping contemporary jazz and R&B musicians. In addition, an array of visual artists will have their paintings, photography and sculptures on display. Bring your own lawn chairs and blankets and get comfy while enjoying original tunes, delicious food and drinks and an inspiring array of talent.

FLORIDA MER CON – This inaugural event celebrates mermaids, mer-men and all manner of mer-folk in – where else? – Florida’s famous Weeki Wachee, home of the springs that have housed live mermaid shows for nearly 60 years. Mer-fans can enjoy live mermaid interactions all weekend, as well as face painting, food trucks, arts and crafts vendors, a children’s coloring contest, a silent auction and more. Parking and admission are free (download your digital ticket in advance), and guests are encouraged to come donning their favorite sea-themed and mermaid costumes or accessories, or just come as you are.

ST. PETE PRIDE – Florida’s biggest month-long celebrations of the LGBTQ+ community happens in St. Petersburg, beginning with a Mx. St. Pete Pride pageant on May 26 and a kick-off party on June 1. The month’s festivities include a Youth & Family Day, a two-day Shades of Pride art and music event honoring diversity, a colorful Saturday parade that draws tens of thousands to the streets and a Sunday vendor “carnival” in the trendy Grand Central District.

TAMPA THEATRE SUMMER CLASSICS MOVIE SERIES – Returning for a 33^rd year, the historic landmark Tampa Theatre is bringing back its popular Summer Classics series, which kicks off the first weekend of June. Among this year’s lineup: “Thelma & Louise,” “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” “Apollo 13,” “The Wizard of Oz,” “Do The Right Thing,” “The Princess Bride” and “Casablanca.” For a special finale treat, the venue’s famous Wurlitzer Theatre Organ will play along for an afternoon of early 20th-century silent comedy classics featuring all-new original musical accompaniment scored and performed live.

SARASOTA MUSIC FESTIVAL – Celebrating its 60^th anniversary, the Sarasota Music Festival is once again hosting three weeks of internationally recognized musicians for what has become known as one of the finest classical-music events in the nation. Enjoy a rare glimpse of both treasured top artists and young rising stars rehearsing and playing together, as well as hearing lectures and learning more about orchestra life and the role of each musician and instrument. This year’s event infuses some fresh sounds, breaking boundaries with jazz and bluegrass influences.

153^rd SILVER SPURS RODEO – Since 1944, the “largest rodeo east of the Mississippi” has been a thrilling semi-annual Osceola County tradition not to be missed. Along with traditional events such as bull riding, tie-down roping, team steer wrestling and women’s barrel racing, attendees will also be treated to acts throughout the night from the rodeo clown, the Junior Silver Spurs Quadrille Team and junior bull riders. Don’t miss the Miss Silver Spurs Pageant, in which contestants from around the county compete for Miss Silver Spurs, Junior Miss Silver Spurs and Little Miss Silver Spurs.

BODY MIND SPIRIT CELEBRATION – This traveling festival brings the latest and greatest in alternative health practices, products and ideologies, as well as psychics, mediums and spiritual teachers to help guide those seeking a holistic approach to wellness and life goals. For a $12 admission, attend a whole weekend of seminars on topics such as card reading, auras, communicating with the afterlife, healing meditation, tarot readings, diet, herbal medicine, financial health and religion. LATIN AMERICAN FESTIVAL OF PERFORMING ARTS – Offering both virtual and live performances, this fest hosted by Latina women-led nonprofit kicks off with a virtual showcase from June 17-20, presenting plays and workshops from Spain, Argentina, Mexico, and Venezuela, followed by captivating live performances from June 21-23 at the Fringe Art Space in downtown Orlando. Experience contemporary New York City, Miami, and Washington D.C. productions with Spanish and English audio and captions in more than 25 languages through AI technology, attend workshops and intrigue the senses with presentations like “Odd Man Out,” where the audience sits in complete darkness while hearing, smelling, tasting and feeling the story of a blind jazz musician traveling to Buenos Aires.

TAMPA BAY AREA JUNETEENTH FESTIVAL – Honoring Juneteenth Independence Day, this R.O.C. the Block fest brings thousands to Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium with live musical acts, DJs and Caribbean performances on the main stage and more than 20 vendors serving a variety of cuisine and sweet treats. Bring the whole family and enjoy bounce houses and obstacle courses, a petting zoo, a basketball court, a health clinic, a job fair and an exciting fireworks show. PANCAKES & BOOZE ART SHOW – Aiming to be the antithesis of the “snoozefest, highfalutin” art events of the upper crust, this world-touring, innovative pop-up show features paintings, sculptures, digital creations, photography and other unusual and beautiful works of art designed to stimulate the senses and have some fun. Along with the creative displays, guests will be able to buy jewelry, stickers, patches and other keepsakes, enjoy upbeat DJ music and participate in body painting and other interactive events. And yes, there will be booze and pancakes, so come hungry.

SOUTHERN HILL FARMS SWEETCORN FESTIVAL – Growing one of the lesser-known Florida crops, Southern Hill Farms is celebrating its annual sweetcorn harvest by welcoming the public to this inaugural fest. The picturesque farm will have live music, a sunflower maze, farm wagon rides, cooking demonstrations and photo ops among stunning fields of zinnia flowers. Hungry guests can sample sweetcorn-based dishes, as well noshing from BBQ, seafood and Cuban food trucks and other farm-based food vendors. SAFETY HARBOR FOOD & MUSIC FESTIVAL – This day-long fest combines good food, cold drinks and fun competition with a co-ed kickball tournament for prizes and bragging rights. ROMANZA FESTIVALE OF THE ARTS — St. Augustine’s annual salute to arts and culture includes dozens of local performers in various venues; with many of the events free. This year’s national headliner is the legendary Count Basie Orchestra, a 2024 Grammy Award winner. Other nationally-renowned performers include Duo Arpeggione (May 8), jazz singer Linda Cole (May 10), the Con Brio String Quartet (May 17) and violinist Luca Ciarla (May 18). The festival events also include art exhibits, musical theater and dance productions, the chamber music series, authors, improv and more.

MAY DAY BARREL BONANZA — Catch some of the premiere barrel racing equestrians when they compete for over $75,000 in prize money during this three-day competition. HAVANA REGGAE FEST — The 14th annual fest brings the genre’s favorite son, Alex Marley, to central Florida for one day of chill island beats and smooth vocals. JACKSONVILLE JAZZ FESTIVAL — For more than forty years, Jacksonville has welcomed jazz legends Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Kenny G, Herbie Hancock and Trombone Shorty, to the city's largest, free, outdoor music festival. This year’s headliners are The Brian McKnight 4, Brian Culbertson and Joss Stone. Jazz lovers will enjoy smooth beats and improv solos on two festival stages. Thursday’s Jazz Piano competition always kicks off the event with five finalists competing for $8,000 in prize money with the winner receiving a chance to perform on one of the main stages on Saturday. The contest’s blind judging panel has included a who’s who of jazz pioneers like Marcus Roberts, Christian Sands, Dr. John, Brian Culbertson and Lynne Arriale.

GULF COAST JAM — PCB kicks off the summer beach season with Morgan Wallen, Cody Johnson, Jelly Roll and Parker McCollum lighting up its gulf front stage. The four-day fest includes over 20 acts featuring hitmakers from the country and southern rock music scenes. The Jim Beam Welcome Sessions kicks off the annual event and pits singer/songwriters against each other with the grand prize being a chance to open for one of the national headliners on the festival’s main stage. FIESTA PENSACOLA — For 75 years, Pensacola always kicks off summer with the annual heritage celebration of the city’s founding by the Spanish Conquistador Don Tristan de Luna in 1559. The Emmanuel Sheppard & Condon Fiesta Days Celebration (May 29) features local dignitaries surrendering the city and its citizens to DeLuna and his Queen. Other events include the Grand Fiesta Parade (May 31), Fiesta Boat Parade (June 1) and Fiesta All Krewe Ball (June 6). Both parades will feature floats or boats, an appearance by the 2024 Fiesta King and Queen and their “royal” court, and the local Krewes.

NAO TRINIDAD TALL SHIP TOUR — Set foot on a 150-ton, 93-foot replica of the Nao Trinidad, the flagship of Magellan-Elcano Expedition which was the first to circumnavigate the globe between 1519 and 1522. The floating museum offers guided or self-guided tours and features four decks of maritime history that explores what life onboard was like for Spanish sailors 500 years ago.

CANDLELIGHT TOUR — Beat the summer heat by touring Amelia Island’s historic fort by candlelight. Guests will experience life as the Civil War soldiers did — free of electricity. Although not as impressive in stature as Castillo San Marcos in St. Augustine, Fort Clinch is also  fantastic to explore during the day with its narrow “underground” passageways, spiral staircases, furnished bunkhouses and gorgeous views of the Atlantic coast. You’ll be able to see Cumberland Island from the northern ramparts that are still “protected” by cannons. Reservations for the candlelight tours are required and open a week ahead of time. Add even more historic flavor to your visit by attending the First Weekend Federal Garrison (June. 1-2). During the Garrison, living historians dress as Union soldiers who occupied the fort during its construction in 1864.

JAX BEACH COUNTRY FEST — If you didn’t know, Floridians love country music — with a passion. Which makes it kind of crazy that Jacksonville didn’t have an annual country fest like its beachfront neighbors to the west. The community is hoping this free, family-friendly, beach-front country music fest will become an annual event. The event lineup includes three American Idol or Voice contestants: Chayce Beckham (winner of his season), HunterGirl and Chase Fouraker. Rounding out the day of music include Jacksonville native Jordan Fletcher and Florida performers Emily Mikus, Jonathan Lee, Madden Metcalf and Craig Smith.

SOARING HIGH — Ooh and aah when the world-famous Blue Angels pilots cruise through the sky at speeds of 700 miles per hour while defying physics with dazzling aerial feats. Their mid-week practices are a great chance to catch the Pensacola-based flyers in a smaller setting than during an airshow. Practice sessions typically last about 55 minutes and begin at 10:30 a.m. There is open bleacher seating for about 500 people in the outdoor viewing area at the National Naval Aviation Museum. After practice, set aside time to explore the museum which houses more than 150 restored aircraft including the SBD-2 Dauntless (It survived the Pearl Harbor attack and is the lone remaining plane that participated in the Battle of Midway.) and HH-1K Iroquois (a famed “Huey” helicopter that transported ground troops during the Vietnam War). On June 5, some of the Blues pilots will visit with fans to answer questions and sign autographs.

GREAT FLORIDA BIGFOOT CONFERENCE — Seriously, we’re not making this up. Did  you know that according to Bigfoot Researcher’s Organization, also known as BFRO, Florida has recorded the third highest number of Sasquatch sightings? (FYI, we fall behind Washington with 717 and California with 461.) So we guess it seems less far fetched that the Sunshine State is now hosting the conference’s fourth annual event. In addition to the all-day series of seminars including Bigfoot researchers, investigators and authors, guests are welcome to participate in a live event called Encounters where they can  share their personal Bigfoot sightings with the audience.

EMERALD COAST BLUE MARLIN CLASSIC — The Blue Marlin Classic is considered one of the top ten big-money, off-shore fishing tournaments in the world by Marlin magazine and usually attracts more than 80 boats. As in year’s past, the fishing tournament is predicted to shell out about $2 million in cash awards. The “modified release” tournament means that blue marlin and billfish are the only catch that can be boated for the daily weigh-ins if they meet a minimum length of 110 inches. The daily weigh-ins at Baytowne Marina include live music, food and Friday night fireworks. Awards are presented for top overall catch, release, lady and junior anglers. Last year, anglers netted 63 billfish including 30 blue marlin and 74 gamefish including 25 dolphin.

AUGUSTINE MUSIC FESTIVAL — Take a break from the seasonal deluge of jazz, rock  and country music fests throughout the state  to salute the world’s greatest classical composers — Georg Philipp Telemann (Don Quixote Suite), Mozart (Concerto for Flute Harp and Orchestra in C major), Stravinsky (Soldier’s Tale for violin, clarinet and piano), Shostakovich (Quartet No. 8), Brahms (Horn Trio), Sibelius (En Saga septet brass quintet, flute and clarinet) and many more — at this free classical music festival. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Civil Rights Act, the Juneteenth Recognition Concert (June 19) will feature the Marcus Roberts Trio jazz trio.

MELON HEADS REJOICE! — Did you know that Florida not only produces 30% of the nation’s watermelon crop, but it’s also responsible for the largest share among all the states. Thanks to this windfall, the agricultural communities celebrate with festivals.

FORGOTTEN COAST SEA TURTLE FESTIVAL — Get educated on the importance of the sea turtle’s habitat at the seventh annual celebration.  The Florida Conservancy and Forgotten Coast Sea Turtle Center have turned this into a hands-on event that includes arts and crafts, kids activities and a Sea Creature Parade. There will also be live music, food trucks and education and conservation groups.
