Join In The Commemoration

Go back in time as you take a walk through the history of Jacksonville and Northeast Florida. The exhibit begins with a look into the life of the Timuquans. Many of their artifacts are featured here, including but not limited to their pottery, arrowheads and spearheads, paint pots, beads and knives. Next, travel to a Spanish colony and visit a replica of an old Spanish church. Some of the Spanish artifacts include real coins and parts of the Spanish ships like pulleys and cargo hooks. Another part of the exhibit explores Civil Rights and Black Heritage. Norman Film Studios is also mentioned, the company that, from 1920-1928, used all black cast and crew and featured African Americans in heroic roles that broke away from the stereotype-cast roles of the time. From our earliest settlers over 12,000 years ago to modern day events, visitors will learn how this area of land we call Jacksonville became the city it is today! Read Less

Roberto Clemente Walker (1934-1972), who played baseball with the Pittsburgh Pirates for 18 years, remains a legendary figure in sports, in philanthropy, and in the hearts of millions in Puerto Rico and America. With a cannon arm and lightning speed that earned him 12 consecutive Gold Glove Awards, four batting crowns, and 3,000 hits, Clemente was an outstanding baseball player, but the Puerto Rico native was also a dedicated humanitarian. Beyond Baseball: The Life of Roberto Clemente, developed by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, the Smithsonian Latino Center, the Clemente family, and the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, is a bilingual tribute to his outstanding achievements that takes visitors on a journey into sports history, ethnic pride, and a profound commitment to helping others. A Tribute, posthumously, to the legacy of late 19th to mid 20th-century African American midwives. These women can be credited with the beginning of life for many of today's productive and notable African American residents, as well as some among the white race. Despite conditions that caused the midwives to carry out their duties under often very difficult, challenging and sometimes-dangerous conditions they gave there all to assure, to the best of their abilities, that proper care was given to both mother and baby. Because of the social times and separation of the races due to legal segregation, these midwives were unknown to many in the boarder society. To this day, their names and influence remain in obscurity, even to many of the African American race. The Gala will be an evening of remembrance. Read Less

Florida A&M University's Office of Black Diasporan Culture (OBDC), Meek-Eaton Black Archives and FAMU's Dept. of African-American Studies will host the annual African Caribbean Concert featuring the Bahamian Junkanoo Rhythm Rushers on Tues., Feb. 28, at 7pm in Lee Hall. Other performers are the FAMU Concert Choir, Tallahassee Community College’s African Drum/Dance Ensemble, TutuOla and Simply Panama. The OBDC was created to share information and provide on-hands demonstrations of traditions-songs, dance, poetry, art and other folkways-that have their roots in Africa. OBDC links African-American, Caribbean, and West African music, dance, and traditions. The Junkanoo Rhythm Rushers, named in honor of the Bahamas national festival, are the organization's most popular resource.
