For a few VISIT FLORIDA videos, I’ve had the privilege to visit Grayton Beach and Apalachicola and it’s always a treat to travel to this section of the state.
As I think about those destinations, there’s another place right up here in the northwest Florida beach region that I’d love to visit again.
It's St. George Island and it's roughly eight miles southeast of Apalachicola. For those looking for how to get to St. George Island, you’ll veer off U.S. 98 and then cross the sleek Bryant Patton St. George Island Bridge. Then the bridge slides down into the heart of the village and here you are.
Because St. George Island is remote, there’s almost a sense of family here. Visitors aren’t attracted by beachfront communities packed wall to wall with towering hotels and rows of chain restaurants. Instead, they choose to see St. George Island because there's a natural sense of privacy and a clear sense of nature.
With Apalachicola Bay to the north and the Gulf of Mexico to the south, an Old Florida feeling, usually found in small markets, independent restaurants and the lodgings found mostly in rental homes, prevails. Once you cross the St. George Island bridge, you’ll arrive and feel as if you’re already home.
St. George Island. It’s off the beaten path, but right on the money.
