Washington Oaks Gardens State Park in Flagler County has been recently added to the National Register of Historic Places and a bike tour in celebration is scheduled for Saturday May 8. The tour will depart the picnic area at 8 a.m. and you'll need to bring along your own bike helmet sunscreen insect repellent and water.
The bike tour will highlight the park's rich history and gardens which was a winter home of Louise and Owen Young. Owen Young was one of the original founders of the RCA Corporation and also became the Chairman of the Board of General Electric in 1922. The home was built in 1937 and was donated to the State of Florida in 1964 after Mr. Young's death.
After the tour stick around and explore the park some more on your own -- Washington Oaks Gardens State Park also has short hiking trails a beach with unique coquina rock formations (great for photography) and you can fish from the seawall along the Matanzas River.
