Our friends at VisitJacksonville.com have compiled a list of the top 10 inexpensive activities to enjoy in the city. Here are five of my faves, in no particular order:

  • Jacksonville Beach Fishing Pier extends nearly a quarter-mile into the Atlantic Ocean, providing a stunning waterfront view. Fishermen $4, pedestrians $1, kids under age 6 free.
  • The Jacksonville Suns are the city's Minor League Baseball team. Affiliated with the Florida Marlins, were 2009-2010 Southern League Champions! Tickets start at just $6.50.
  • Tree Hill Nature Center is just minutes from downtown, but it feels a world away. Enjoy the serenity of 50 acres of trails, butterfly and hummingbird gardens, live animal displays, a Florida natural history museum and more. Adults $4, seniors/students/military $3, children $2, ages 2 and under free. Every Saturday, admission drops to just $5 per family. There's also a complimentary 10 a.m. craft activity each Saturday.
  • Ritz Theatre and Museum is your ticket to Jacksonville's African-American history. Located on the site of a historic movie house, it features animatronics and walkable "streets" that bring the city's black heritage to life. Adults $6, children and seniors $3.
  • The Riverwalk is Jacksonville paved walkway along the St. Johns River. Enjoy a view of the boats and cityscape as you stroll hand-in-hand with your sweetie, or lace up your sneakers and hit the trail for a workout. Best of all, it's free.
