Nestled at the very northeast tip of Florida, Amelia Island is covered with rich vegetation, making it the perfect spot for nature reserves, championship golf courses, and relaxing getaways.

I went for the golf, and stayed at the Omni Amelia Island Resort. I was eager to have a beachside-facing room, as it always seems that I get the room that faces the parking lot, but I was pleasantly surprised to find out that all 404 guestrooms face the ocean. I was greeted with complimentary champagne, strawberries, and coffee in the morning.

The next morning, I walked out on my balcony and not only noticed the luxurious pools, hot tubs, bars, and ocean, but I could also see the sixth hole of the Ocean Links Course. It was an extraordinary sight and I couldn’t wait to start making birdies.

The Omni Resort offers two championship courses that are open to the public. Oak Marsh and Ocean Links, designed by Pete Dye and Bobby Weed, are located next to and throughout tidal marshes, the Intracoastal Waterway, the Atlantic Ocean, and mature live oak trees.

Playing the Ocean Links was quite an adventure. Swinging alongside the ocean always brings a calmness to my game (especially since there are no forced water carries) but truthfully the ambiance has a magical feeling to it.

You don’t have to be especially long off the tee, but beware of the thick nature preserves that line the fairway. The greens are quick and consistent, and some pin placements might have your putts not just rolling past the hole, but off the green and into the bunker.

I can write about the course all day long, but you really must come to The Omni Amelia Island Resort and see it for yourself.
