The Treasure Coast of Florida is the gorgeous area that extends down the eastern part of the state from Vero Beach to Stuart. This area holds some of the greatest treasures in Florida and includes an abundance of fun activities for families of all ages and sizes.

After living here for a few years I've put together my list of the top things to do in the Treasure Coast with kids, though there is always more to explore.

Some of the spots are well known throughout the world, while others are local hidden gems. Regardless of the category, these fun places are must-stops when visiting the area.

1. Disney's Vero Beach Resort

You don't necessarily have to travel to Orlando to experience Disney Magic. Vero Beach is the Home of the Disney's Vero Beach Resort, one of the most fun stops on the Treasure Coast.

It's a gorgeous homage to old Florida, complete with decor -- including old cannons and lots of Disney Magic – that sends you back in time.

One thing that makes this place a must visit for even local families is the Disney Character breakfast at Sonya's restaurant on the resort grounds. It takes place every Saturday and brings out two of the best Disney friends around -- Donald Duck and Goofy.

Prices are very reasonable for the “all you care to eat” family style breakfast, complete with signature Mickey Waffles.

This resort also includes a gorgeous chunk of Treasure Coast beach, which is exclusive to guests and has one of the greatest pools around.

This resort includes all the ammenities you could ask for from a Disney vacation, including a gorgeous spa. It’s a perfect retreat for parents while their kids enjoy fun, supervised activities at the Disney Discovery Club. It's one of the top things to do in the Treasure Coast for both parents and kids.

2. Environmental Learning Center, Vero Beach

The Environmental Learning Center, located on 64 acres of gorgeous island sanctuary, has become a home away from home for our family. This sanctuary is filled with magical surprises, including birds, fish, crustaceans and mammals.

You and your kids will learn from nature, via awesome educational displays and a touch tank that bring these experiences to life. No matter how many times you visit, you can always discover a new gem awaiting. This is a must stop while in Vero Beach and is conveniently only steps away from the Disney Resort.

3. Sailfish Splash Water Park, Stuart

This park has four-story tall water slides, a 1,000-foot lazy river, cabanas, shaded picnic areas and a lap pool. There's a zero-entry pool for younger children, where they'll find a water playground, sprays and slides. Children can take swimming lessons, diving classes or join the swim team. Sailfish Splash is a fun seasonal place to visit.

4. McKee Botanical Gardens, Vero Beach

McKee Botanical Gardens is a fun stop for seasonal exhibits geared toward kids of all ages. These magnificent exhibits, nestled among the tropical hammocks and wildlife, highlight a true Florida experience.

5. Al's Fruit Farm, Fort Pierce

This is such a fun place to visit and explore I had to include it. As a matter of fact, my kids insisted. We love to make pit stops at Al's Fruit Farm and eat their delicious orange ice cream and try out all the amazing goodies they have available.

During season you get to experience some really fun things to do in the Treasure Coast, such as the citrus hay maze. There are daily tours, so call ahead for times. Don't forget to pick-up a jug of their famous orange juice; you’ll never look at OJ the same way again.

6. Smithsonian Marine Station, Fort Pierce

This is near one of my favorite Treasure Coast waterways, the Fort Pierce Inlet. Make sure and bring a bathing suit when you visit the Smithsonian Marine Station because chances are you'll want to take a dip. The main building houses some of the most interesting creatures you'll find in Florida waters, and is a fantastic learning center perfect for little ones. The first Tuesday of the month is free so make sure and check it out then, although the regular admission is very reasonable and worth every cent.

7. The beaches

You’ll find beautiful beaches all along the gorgeous Treasure Coast. Some are public and some are private so make sure and read the signs before settling down for some fun. Don’t forget to bring your buckets because you'll find some gorgeous shells along the way. Sea turtle season runs from March to October and is a magnificent sight. You’ll be amazed at the grandeur of these creatures that make their yearly trek during this time.

8. Riverside Theatre, Vero Beach

You’ll find some great shows playing at Riverside Theatre, including the likes of    “A Chorus Line” and “Hello, Dolly” and more. Shows aren't all you'll find, though. There are workshops and classes for kids wanting to explore the arts. They also host great events, including the Pirate Festival that pays homage to all that is Florida. Events differ through the year so make sure and check out what's going on during your visit.

9. Indian RiverSide Park, Jensen Beach

This is a fun stop on any adventure. It comes complete with a splash park and small beach that leads off to the lagoon. Indian RiverSide Park also has a pier from which you can fish. Your kids will have a blast splashing around and enjoying all the fun there is to be had in the Florida sun.

10. Club Med Sandpiper Bay, Port St. Lucie

Filled with all the fun activities that have made Club Med Sandpiper Bay one of the most sought after vacations locations in the world, this is the perfect place to set up camp and experience all the beauty and activities the Treasure Coast has to offer.

11. The Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast, Jensen Beach

The contemporary Children's Museum of the Treasure Coast boasts hands-on, interactive activities and displays about nature, health, history & recycling, offering children and families a place to explore and learn.

The Treasure Coast really is a treasure, for both you and your family.
