First off, just call it the "Chazz." You'll hear lots of different pronunciations of the Chassahowitzka River (say it with me: Chass-a-wiz-ka), so most folks just save themselves a lot of trouble and go with the shortened version. Either way, folks along Florida's Nature Coast in Citrus County will know what you're after.

I've paddled the Chassahowitzka River tons of times, but this is one of those trips worth doing time and time again. You can paddle the river to the Gulf of Mexico, or a popular springs-hopping day trip is about seven miles total. From the launch, take a right and check out Seven Sisters (keep your eyes peeled for manatees, too), or head straight downriver to runs that lead out to Baird, Potters, Little and Big Salt, or the Crack. Those are just a few of the scenic side trips along the Chazz.

Entry to the Chassahowitzka River is located south of Homosassa, at 8600 West Miss Maggie Drive. Tours are available with Nature Coast Eco Tours and rentals are available at the Chassahowitzka River Campground, which is right at the boat ramp. There's a $5 parking fee.

If you want to spend the night, you can camp in one of the full-hookup RV or primitive tent sites at the Chassahowitzka River Campground.
