Trail Tuesday: Sarasota County's Legacy Trail
If you haven't spent time on Sarasota County's Legacy Trail, make sure to add it to your to-do list. Totaling about 12 miles, it's the perfect length for a half-day bike ride from Sarasota to Venice and back. Joggers, walkers and inline skaters all are right at home on the paved Legacy Trail too, and there's plenty of scenery to enjoy along the way.
Currently, there are six trailheads providing access to the Legacy Trail, with more planned in the future. The trail also passes through Oscar Scherer State Park for about two miles – look for gopher tortoises, the rare Florida scrub-jay and other wildlife in this section. The trail is superbly maintained, with cool railroad-style signage and rest stops.
More good news – the Legacy Trail Overpass is almost complete! The official ribbon cutting ceremony is Nov. 5 at the Venice Train Depot. Festivities start at 9 a.m. and last 'til 1 p.m. Make sure to attend!
Folks, this is a terrific rail-trail to explore, and I love that you can ride from Sarasota to Venice with Oscar Scherer State Park being right in the middle. You can set up camp at Oscar Scherer State Park, explore the trails there and head out to either Venice or Sarasota too! That's really cool.
