Like a Little Fishing with Your Golf? Try Hombre Golf Club in Northwest Florida
By Tim McDonald
Most golfers have a love for the outdoors and many golfers love to fish, so here's a good deal for those who want to do both.
The Inn at Carillon is located in Panama City in Northwest Florida (whose beaches are still clean and open). The inn has a special right now that combines golf and fishing as well as dinner and a Gulf cruise.
The deal offers four nights of lodging, one dinner for two at Carraba's Italian Grill, a round for two at Hombre Golf Club, a half-day deep-sea fishing excursion and an hour-long cruise around Shell Island.
I've played Hombre several times, and it's one of my favorite courses in Northwest Florida. It's a 27-hole facility by the Gulf of Mexico, that features the Gulf's cooling breezes wafting over the three, nine-hole layouts.
It's a challenging course if your driver has been sulking, with tight, tree-lined fairways; the original 18 holes are lined with pines while the owners brought in palm trees that border the fairways of the newer course.
Not surprisingly, since the course is so close to the beach, water is a frequent companion as you play your way around the track – it's there on 21 of the 27 holes in the form of lakes, ponds and small canals.
The course has excellent greens, multi-tiered with tricky ridges, slopes and valleys. They make an excellent course even better.
The package is $172 a night and must be booked by June 30. For more information, call 866-832-7070.
