For experienced paddlers only, the 99-mile Wilderness Waterway connects Everglades City and Flamingo and is considered the most remote and wild paddling trail in Florida for its length. Much of the route can be a confusing maze of mangrove-lined creeks and bays that can begin to look alike, so good navigational tools and skills are a must. Permits must be obtained for designated campsites and chickees. Most paddlers allow at least eight days to complete the journey. Besides the park's online wilderness trip planner, a number of guidebooks about the trail can be purchased from online retailers or from your local bookstore.
