St. George Island State Park, Gap Point Trail
Beginning at the park campground (parking adjacent to the playground), this 5-mile loop trail traverses coastal slash pine flatwoods and ancient dunes, past impressive rosemary scrub bushes. Several of the slash pines show scars where they were tapped for turpentine more than a half century ago. The sand can be soft, so foot travel can be slow, and bring plenty of water. After 2.5 miles, arrive at the scenic Gap Point Primitive campsite along Apalachicola Bay, good for an overnight stay or lunch stop. Obtain a permit at the entrance station for overnight camping. Other hiking opportunities in the park include the one-mile East Slough Trail and 9 miles of near pristine Gulf beaches.
