Imagine living in Florida in the late 1800s to early 1900s. Can you picture in your mind the challenge of constructing a home out of the natural environment available to you - tall pine trees, red cedar, dogwood and live oak. What would it take to clear the land needed to grow your own food crops and to raise your own livestock? What type of relationship would you have with your neighbors? What type of tools would be at your disposal? How would you store your food during the summer months? What would you use to tidy your yard and the floor of your home? What would a hot pot of freshly brewed coffee mean to you at the start of your day? How would you entertain yourself? What would you do to pass the time? All these questions and many others are answered annually at the Renaissance Park in Marianna, FL during its Living Heritage Day. Please join us this year and help us to remember and to celebrate the heritage of rural Florida, and its folklife traditions of pig picking, hog dressing, sausage making and soap making. Bear witness to our living heritage where sugarcane is ground on site and cooked down to syrup in an 80-gallon, cast-iron kettle. It's a load of fun and we wouldn't want you to miss out.
