The Gadsden Arts Center & Museum is pleased to present its major exhibition for the fall season, Hofmann to Warhol. The exhibition will take visitors on a trip that begins with America’s first major artistic movement, Abstract Expressionism, and continues through the Pop Art explosion of the 1960s. Come experience some of the most uniquely American explorations in art from the 20th Century. Hofmann to Warhol will be on display from September 25th to December 12th, 2020 with visits available by reservation at www.gadsdenarts.org to ensure a limited number of people in the galleries at one time. Admission Free days are October 3, November 7, and December 5, 2020, also by reservation. The exhibition includes work from well-known American artists such as Josef Albers, Roy Lictenstein, Helen Frankethaler, Robert Rauschenberg, and Andy Warhol. The 1950s and 60s saw an explosion of iterations on the abstract theme, and during that time period, American artists moved past the dark expressions of a war-torn world, through the expressive use of form and color as an outlet for emotion, to an exploration of “art for its own sake”, using color, shape, pattern, composition, and other purely visual tools to create fascinating visual and emotional effects. Artists then moved on from these explorations to embrace the preposterous and silly, commenting on mass consumerism and popular American culture with Pop Art.
