History of Diving Museum is excited about the new Featured Exhibit, Dive Into Art. The exhibit features creative artwork from the members of the Art Guild of the Purple Isles and local students, as well as historical artifacts on loan from Leslie Leaney and Michael Menduno of the Historical Diving Society reflecting work by early pioneers of underwater painting. Using the ocean as their inspiration, all of the artists interpret the underwater world through various mediums and creative styles.

Through a generous grant from the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys, HDM was able to collaborate with the Art Guild, Key Largo School and Plantation Key School to take visitors beneath the waves. Over 200 students waved their paintbrushes and molded clay to produce an immersive reef environment for viewers to enjoy. Family and friends are invited to view the wooden sea creatures, each uniquely painted and hanging in the exhibit. There is also a large reef scene painted on canvas which hangs behind a colorful ceramic reef teeming with sea critters. Students who participated in creating the exhibit will be visiting the Museum, thanks to an additional grant provided to the Museum.

The art produced by the Guild members represents many forms of creativity through detailed paintings, crisp underwater photography, and unique mixed medias. The pieces reflect the watery world that surrounds the Florida Keys and our interactions within it. Visitors have the opportunity to purchase the artwork from the artists with a portion of the proceeds benefiting our non-profit Museum.
