HORSING AROUND IN WELLINGTON – Head west of West Palm Beach to Wellington for two outstanding horse and rider-centric multi-month happenings: the Winter Equestrian Festival and the Palm Beach International Polo Season. The former brings together the partnership of horse and rider during the thrills and grace of show jumping and the elegance of dressage. The latter features the best polo players in the world. Both are as much about the horsey-set lifestyle with many options and side shows to keep you entertained and well-fed.

ALPHONSE MUCHA: MASTER OF ART NOUVEAU – A renaissance of creativity produced the Art Nouveau movement amid the cobblestone streets and gas-lit boulevards of Paris at the end of the 19th century and dawn of the 20th century. Characterized by sinuous lines, organic forms and intricate designs, this movement in art and design found its virtuoso interpreter in Alphonse Mucha, whose work is featured in this museum exhibition.

FLORIDA IN WORLD WAR II – Florida played an important part in the war effort, becoming home to hundreds of military installations. Florida’s strategic location, excellent flying weather and proximity to vital shipping lanes made it ideal for army and navy airfields, most notably the 5,800-acre Boca Raton Army Air Field.  The exhibit explores home-front contributions, military training, the U-Boat threat and Floridians in service.

MIAMI BEACH POLO WORLD CUP – In Europe, they play polo in the snow, so why not beach polo in SoFla? Players on eight teams will be competing in a series of high goal matches during the three-day event. In addition to seeing some of the best players in the world, there are a series of offsite events that fuse polo, fashion and luxury. A VIP option will get you shaded lounge areas, a full bar and a stacked menu of outstanding food.

CONCH REPUBLIC INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATION – The Florida Keys didn’t really officially leave the United States back in 1982– or did they? The celebration’s motto is “We seceded where others have failed,” but judge for yourself and have a great time at this 10-day, tongue-firmly-planted-in-cheek bash. Events include a drag race (not cars; remember, this is the Keys!), a wacky bed race, polar plunge and a light-hearted sea battle featuring tall ships.

MIAMI FILM FESTIVAL – The 41st iteration of this So Fla tradition will showcase some 165 feature narratives, documentaries and short films of all genres from 31 countries worldwide. There will be 10 world premieres, 10 North American premieres, five U.S. premieres and 42 Florida premieres. The opening night film is a comedy, Thelma, starring June Squibb, Fred Hechinger, Richard Roundtree, Parker Posey, Clark Gregg and Malcolm McDowell. Director Josh Margolin will be on hand to introduce the film. One of the festival’s centerpiece attractions will be The Idea of You, starring Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine. It is directed by Michael Showalter, who was at the helm for many celebrated films, including The Eyes of Tammy Faye and The Big Sick.
Some of the celebrities in attendance will be actors Adria Arjona, Heather Graham, Bryan Greenberg, Jeremy Priven and Alison Brie and Tony Goldwyn, the director of the closing night film, Ezra. The cast includes Bobby Cannavale, Rose Byrne, Robert De Niro, Vera Farmiga, Whoopi Goldberg and Rainn Wilson. Tickets for all festival showings go quickly, so book soon.

7-MILE OFFSHORE GRAND PRIX – The American Power Boat Association kicks of its 2024 season in the Keys and will feature some of the best and fastest boats in the world. International teams will navigate a course in the Gulf of Mexico, but close to shore. Viewing will also be available on the newly-renovated Old-7 Mile Bridge, allowing fans to be up close to all the action.  There will also be parades, entertainment and parties.

TAMIAMI TRAIL CELEBRATION –This year’s event celebrates the 96th anniversary of the completion of the road across the Everglades and the birthday of the Museum of the Everglades. The Naples Jazz Band will play the hits of the Roaring ’20s and birthday cake will be served. There will also be a hilarious laundry cart race, a motorcade of classic cars and a parade through town.

MINTO U.S. OPEN PICKLEBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS – This is a world-class international event, attracting the best players in the world, as well as pickleball enthusiasts of all ages and ability levels. It’s being held at a 64-court venue which is one of the best in the country.  About 3,000 people are expected to participate in this year’s event, ranging in age from eight to 88. You’ll also enjoy live music, beverages and yummy food.

SWEET CORN FIESTA -- Sunshine yellow, hot and buttery! What’s not to like about freshly harvested sweet corn grown locally in the famous black soil of The Glades Region in The Palm Beaches. Live music, carnival rides, lots of summertime foods and kids activities will keep you smiling all day long. There will also be a sweet corn eating challenge and a corn shucking contest.

BLACK GOLD JUBILEE – This annual festival pays homage to the rich soil (hence, Black Gold) of the Glades Region (consisting of Belle Glade, Pahokee and South Bay) at the end of the harvest season. Highlights include great food, country music (Mark Chestnutt and Molly Hatchet are the headliners), a volleyball tournament, a cornhole tournament, a 5k walk/run, two beauty pageants (one is for the young ’uns), vendor booths, a vintage car show, arts show, a parade, a children’s fishing tournament, a photography contest, an axe-throwing contest and a fireworks display.

DELRAY AFFAIR – If you haven’t been to Delray Beach in a while, this would be the perfect time to go and be a part of the 62nd anniversary of this event.  It stretches 10 blocks long and the entire downtown is alive with an eclectic mix of fine art, great crafts and funky products from around the world. Some 400 artists and crafters will be showing their work. It will also include food vendors, live music and lots of activities for kids. Enjoy a glass of wine or a cold beer as you peruse the art.

FORT LAUDERDALE DOG CLUB SHOW – Be prepared to be awed by these amazing and cute four-legged critters. More than 150 dogs will be competing for Best in Show. The four-to-six month-old puppy competition will definitely put a smile on your face. Also, breeders will be competing for the Best- Bred-By Exhibitor and there is the always popular Pee Wee Competition for dogs from five to nine pounds.

MIAMI DADE COUNTRYFEST – It used to be known as the Miami International Agriculture Horse and Cattle Show. So, it returns with a shorter name but the same amount of fun, if not more. In addition to the prime cattle auctions and shows, it also includes carnival rides, live music, a rodeo, equestrian shows, kids activities, a truck show and food trucks.

EVENING ON ANTIQUE ROW – It’s one of SoFla’s most fashionable street parties. An area known as Antique Row comes alive with music and special entertainment, gourmet food and cocktails and an antiques appraisal tent. The unique shops will stay open late so attendees will have plenty of time to explore 17th to 20th century antiques, decorative art, fine art and design services.

WHATEVER FLOATS YOUR BOAT – If it’s plywood, head to the Plywood Regatta. If it’s cardboard, check out the Cardboard Boat Regatta. At the former, middle school, high school and college students will build and race boats using hand-tools and a limited set of supplied materials. The latter is open to folks of all ages, but the idea is pretty much the same. Good fun and lots of laughs will be had at both.

O, MIAMI POETRY FESTIVAL – This month-long event’s bold mission is to have every person in Miami-Dade County encounter a poem. Mixing traditional readings with innovative poetry-in-public places projects, the festival weaves poetry into the fabric of the existing infrastructure and cultural life. It’s a community-based festival that considers itself a “Miami” festival first and a poetry festival second because the poetry is the means to celebrate the city.

LAS OLAS WINE AND FOOD FESTIVAL – Fort Lauderdale’s famous Las Olas Boulevard shuts down for an evening and many of the area’s top restaurants will serve tapas, sliders, salads, cheeses, flatbreads and other dishes. BEACH VROOOOOM-A-THONS! – Look! Up in the sky! It’s not Superman! It’s not a bird! It will be planes – the military kind – at two SoFla air shows in May:

  • FORT LAUDERDALE AIR SHOW – The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds are the headliners for this one. The Thunderbirds and their pilots showcase the capabilities of the Air Force’s premier multi-role fighter jet, the F-16 Fighting Falcon. Other highlights include the Ghost Squadron, the Socom Para-Commandos and the Air Force Heritage Flight team. The Ghost Squadron’s jets perform breathtaking aerobatics and they are a pivotal training ground for future astronauts. The Para-Commandos are the U.S. Special Operations Command’s premier parachute demonstration team. The Heritage Flight show combines modern and attack aircraft flying alongside World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War era planes. Also on hand will be some of the country’s best civilian air performers. There are VIP options that offer various levels of comfort, viewing ability and luxury.

  • HYUNDAI AIR & SEA SHOW – Also known as A National Salute to America’s Heroes, it honors and showcases the men, women, technology and equipment from all five branches of the United States Military and police, firefighters and their first responder agencies. The in-the-air events are spectacular, with the Air Force providing most of the action (the F-35 Lightning II, a B-52 Bomber, the F-16 Fighting Falcon and the  A-10 Thunderbolt, just to name a few). But wait, there’s more: offshore powerboat racing, extreme water sports, a kids zone (with bungee jumping and a rock-climbing wall), a huge food court and the FPL Display village. The latter is a five-block long interactive experience featuring military and training equipment, motocross performances and boxing exhibitions. Following the air & sea show on the first day there will be the Music Explosion, featuring a DJ, the US. Army’s “As You Were” band, the US. Air Force Drill team, the Miami Beach Classical Music Festival Orchestra and a national music act still to be named. When day gives way tonight, there will be a 3D mapping projection illuminating Ocean Drive’s iconic buildings. The first-day show will end with a night-pyro demonstration by the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team kicking off a fireworks extravaganza. There are several VIP packages to consider.

FLEET WEEK MIAMI– After being held for years at Port Everglades in Broward County, this event has moved south. The highlight, other than seeing uniformed U.S. Navy personnel all around Miami-Dade County for a week, will be tours of navy ships. For security reasons, the ships will not be identified until much closer to the event, but they usually include an amphibious assault ship, a destroyer, an expeditionary fast transport and a submarine. There are many ancillary events, such as dinners, breakfasts, a fishing tournament and a golf tournament, all including Navy personnel. If you want to tour a ship, keep in mind that spots fill up quickly, so reserve early.

SUNFEST – Check out the music headliners for this year’s extravaganza: Nelly, Shaggy and Billy Idol on Friday; The Revivalists, Elle King, Cole Swindell and Yung Gravy on Saturday, and Rebolution, Dashboard Confessional and Third Eye Blind on Sunday. But the music is only the beginning. More than 100 artists will present their work in the Creative Arts Village that will also feature artist demonstrations, immersive art installations and innovative new products. Stop by the Ford Electric Lounge and check out the Mustang Mach-E and the F-150 Lightning. The food at Sunfest is always plentiful, yummy and diverse, including Caribbean flavors, barbecue and ethnic favorites. And, there’s always a party going on at those three famous floating bars, with their specialty cocktails and frozen drinks. A huge fireworks display closes the festival on Sunday night.

FORMULA 1 CRYPTO.COM MIAMI GRAND PRIX – Attendees will see the highest class of international racing for open-wheel, single seat race cars. Formula 1 cars are the fasted regulated road course racing vehicles in the world. The Miami race is on a 3.36 mile-long track and it will feature 19 corners and three straight-aways. The cars will reach tops speeds of nearly 200 miles per hour. The top Formula 1 drivers will compete, including the top five finishers last year: winner Max Verstappen,  Sergio Perez (second), Fernando Alonso (third),  George Russell (fourth) and Carlos Sainz (fifth). There are also other races over the three-day weekend. Check out the Team Village, set up on the football field inside the stadium the Miami Dolphins call home. Drivers, pit crews and other race-team members will be based there throughout the weekend. It’s open to all ticket-holders and you can get a close-up look at all the behind-the-scenes action. VIP packages will enhance the experience.  Delicious food, good music and an amazing art gallery are also part of the experience.

THE MESSI EXPERIENCE – Messi, Messi, Messi! Literally, it’s all about soccer legend Lionel (although almost nobody uses his first name) Messi. This multimedia exhibit that takes a deep dive into his life and career kicks off a world tour in South Florida. It has nine thematic installations that feature state of the art technology, such as 360-degree mapping, 3D and AI. Fans can speak with Messi using AI, take a selfie with a virtual Messi and get a taste of training like him.

KEY WEST SONGWRITERS FESTIVAL – It features some 200 performers spread over five days and nights, some of whom have written songs for and/or performed with lots of A-Listers in the music biz, mostly in the country genre. Some also have gone on to have very successful careers of their own. The headliners this year are Cole Swindell, Dallas Davidson, Robert Earl Keen, Dylan Marlowe, Lori McKenna, Robert Randolph and Liz Rose.

LITTLE HAITI BOOK FESTIVAL – The theme for this year’s off-shoot of the Miami Book Fair is Ansamn/Together. There will be a full day of activities, including literature, art, music, dance, comedy, yoga, storytelling and hands-on activities for children, panel discussions and conversations about AI, a poetry workshop and a distribution of free children’s books. It all adds up to a true celebration of Haiti’s vibrant culture and community.

SWEETHEAT MIAMI – A popular Pride celebration that was created by women for women, Sweetheat Miami consists of a week’s worth of pool parties, speed dating, nightlife parties, DJs, live music and dancing. REDLAND INTERNATIONAL ORCHID FESTIVAL – It will feature more than 50 booths of educational exhibits and vendors exhibiting an array of orchid species and hybrids. Learn about orchid caretaking through grower demonstrations and lectures. Watch as vendors and exhibitors vie for titles in an event judged by the American Orchid Society. There will also be international food for purchase. Everyone who buys a ticket in advance is automatically entered in one of two raffles. A second opportunity to enter is given to everyone who buys a ticket at the gate and fills out a raffle ticket. You could be the winner of scores of orchid plants, crafts and supplies.

ORCHID AND ART FESTIVAL – It you haven’t yet visited the beautiful Miami Beach Botanical Garden, this would a great time for your first trip. SARASOTA ART MUSEUM: THE TRUTH OF THE NIGHT SKY EXHIBIT– Multimedia artist Anne Patterson and composer Patrick Harlin join forces to create an immersive, thought-provoking installation evoking a lunar voyage. The exhibit, only on display for five months, is designed to engage the senses as visitors plunge into color-filled light or enveloping darkness and move in rhythm with exalting music or ambient sound. PADDLEFEST — Cruising the coastal, salt water rivers of north central Florida should be on any paddler’s Sunshine State bucket list. And although it can be done solo, it’s more fun with a group. Paddlers of any skill level are welcome at this spring event at Big Lagoon State Park that features three days of guided paddles, social gatherings, catered meals and an opportunity to learn about the state’s 1,500-mile Circumnavigation Saltwater Paddling Trail. ISLE OF EIGHT FLAGS SHRIMP FESTIVAL — Fernandina’s biggest party of the year pays tribute to all eight flags that have flown over the city. In its storied history, one flag has flown over the city twice. Can you guess which one? ARTSQUEST FINE ART FESTIVAL — Just like what we wear gets a refresh in the spring, our indoor and outdoor living spaces also benefit from a new look. Shop for one-of-a-kind treasures from more than 100 artists and crafters in fields like jewelry, metal, mixed media, oils and acrylics, digital art, glass, photography, sculpture, wood, watercolor and printmaking. Because the fest’s juried contest awards $10,000 in cash prizes, it attracts a lineup of national artists looking to meet new faces while enjoying our sand, surf and sunshine. Also includes live music, student exhibits and food vendors.

CEDAR LAKE WOODS & GARDENS SPRING FESTIVAL — It only took 26 years of hard work, vision and planning to turn a 110-year-old limestone quarry into a botanical oasis about 20 minutes from Gainesville. Explore the quarry’s man-made islands and crisscross its turquoise waters multiple times on bridges made from Brazilian walnut. The 20-acre botanical garden showcases tree canopy walkways, waterfalls, gazebos and numerous overlooks perfect for panoramic photos. The garden’s creator still has a home on the property and part of the upper path traverses its back porch. The perfect time to explore is during the 9th annual festival which includes live music, food trucks, arts and crafts vendors and rare plants for sale. FISH TO FORK — The Omni Amelia Island always welcomes nationally-renowned chefs for its annual dock-to-dish culinary extravaganza. This year’s celebrity chef lineup includes Sam Fore (Tuk Tuk Snack Shop, Lexington, Kentucky), Jasmine Norton (The Urban Oyster, Baltimore, Maryland), Steven Goff (Asheville, North Carolina), Jonathan Zaragoza (Birrieria Zaragoza, Chicago), Robyn Almodovar (Timbr, Fort Lauderdale) and Omar Collazo (Omni Amelia Island). Diners can enjoy a five-hour fishing excursion with one of the chefs where the fresh catch becomes that night’s dinner, individual and team cooking challenges and a cocktail experience. MAY DAY BARREL BONANZA — Catch some of the premiere barrel racing equestrians when they compete for over $75,000 in prize money during this three-day competition. The sport pairs speed with the ability to navigate tight turns and showcases competitors of all ages. Although the hefty cash purse is a huge draw for the event, the top winners also receive championship saddles, buckles and bragging rights.

HAVANA REGGAE FEST — The 14th annual fest brings the genre’s favorite son, Alex Marley, to central Florida for one day of chill island beats and smooth vocals. It also features performances by Earthkry, King Tappa, Rik Jam, Janeel Mills and Dalwayne. The cultural experience includes island cuisine, art, gifts and more. Before the live music begins, guests are welcome to enjoy the center’s trails on ATVs or kids’ go-karts.

TUPELO HONEY FESTIVAL — Enjoy a day trip to “real” Florida in the one stoplight town of Wewahitchka, renowned for serving as the home to a generation of beekeepers who harvest its native “liquid gold”, a.k.a. Tupelo Honey. Compete in a Honey Tasting Contest and purchase honey (of course!) in different sizes as well as locally-made products featuring it. This family-friendly fest also includes food and craft vendors and live music.

JACKSONVILLE JAZZ FESTIVAL — For more than forty years, Jacksonville has welcomed jazz legends Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Kenny G, Herbie Hancock and Trombone Shorty, to the city's largest, free, outdoor music festival. This year’s headliners are The Brian McKnight 4, Brian Culbertson and Joss Stone. Jazz lovers will enjoy smooth beats and improv solos on two festival stages. Thursday’s Jazz Piano competition always kicks off the event with five finalists competing for $8,000 in prize money with the winner receiving a chance to perform on one of the main stages on Saturday. The contest’s blind judging panel has included a who’s who of jazz pioneers like Marcus Roberts, Christian Sands, Dr. John, Brian Culbertson and Lynne Arriale.

GULF COAST JAM — PCB kicks off the summer beach season with Morgan Wallen, Cody Johnson, Jelly Roll and Parker McCollum lighting up its gulf front stage. The four-day fest includes over 20 acts featuring hitmakers from the country and southern rock music scenes. The Jim Beam Welcome Sessions kicks off the annual event and pits singer/songwriters against each other with the grand prize being a chance to open for one of the national headliners on the festival’s main stage. Those looking to burn off excess energy can participate in Saturday’s Jam on the Coast 5K. All runners receive a race t-shirt and finisher medal.
