Join In The Commemoration

Go back in time as you take a walk through the history of Jacksonville and Northeast Florida. The exhibit begins with a look into the life of the Timuquans. Many of their artifacts are featured here, including but not limited to their pottery, arrowheads and spearheads, paint pots, beads and knives. Next, travel to a Spanish colony and visit a replica of an old Spanish church. Some of the Spanish artifacts include real coins and parts of the Spanish ships like pulleys and cargo hooks. Another part of the exhibit explores Civil Rights and Black Heritage. Norman Film Studios is also mentioned, the company that, from 1920-1928, used all black cast and crew and featured African Americans in heroic roles that broke away from the stereotype-cast roles of the time. From our earliest settlers over 12,000 years ago to modern day events, visitors will learn how this area of land we call Jacksonville became the city it is today! Read Less

Fort Pickens rangers offer daily guided tours at 2:00 p.m. Tours are 45 minutes to one hour in length. Fort Pickens Area of Gulf Islands National Seashore is open daily 7:00 am to sunset (Fort Pickens opens at 8:00 a.m.). Four hundred and fifty years ago the Frenchman Jean Ribault approached the coast of Florida and saw a large river. As this happened on May first, he named it River of May, now known as the St. Johns River. He explored both sides of the river and met the native Timucua inhabitants. Through a series of rare sixteenth century engravings and original maps, his exploits in Florida are visualized in this exhibition organized by the Beaches Museum and drawn from the private collection of Michael and Dr. Linda Fisher. The Art Center Cooperative, the Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT), the Cathedral Arts Project, St. Johns Riverkeeper, Duval County Public Schools and Comcast have developed and sponsored the River Art Mentorship Program � educationally based, maritime-themed art workshops for select Duval County Public School (DCPS) middle school students. The program�s purpose is to provide creatively gifted students the opportunity to continue practicing art, while expanding their knowledge of the region�s greatest asset, the St. Johns River. Sessions began with a river tour continued with workshops focusing on painting, print making, woodturning and mixed media taught by professional artist mentors from The Art Center. These workshops, are being offered at no charge to the students, funding is received through a grant from Target and in-kind donations from supporters. The students were encouraged to produce works of art which reflect both the industrial and natural beauty of the St. Johns River. Read Less
