Suwannee River Wilderness Trail (Upper)

The Suwannee Wilderness Trail, a state-designated Florida paddling trail, provides a managed wilderness experience while educating visitors about protecting the natural, cultural and heritage resources in the Suwannee River Basin. Visitor opportunities extend outwards from the river to include recreational "hubs," recreational trails, parks, museums, cultural sites and other nature and heritage attractions in adjacent cities, towns and rural landscapes throughout the area. Originating in the vast Okefenokee Swamp, the upper Suwannee features high banks lined with arching live oaks, pines, and cypress. White sand beaches make for good campsites or you can use screened pavilions or rent cabins at one of several "river camps" established for the Suwannee Wilderness Trail. Above White Springs, paddlers should portage Big Shoals, the only Class III rapids in Florida. The river also boasts more than 70 springs, many of which are found in the middle section.

Good posture will keep you paddling more comfortably and longer. Read More » Keep your back straight or slightly forward, knees slightly bent. Your grip on the paddle should be relaxed – practice makes perfect.  Read Less »
