Colt Creek State Park - More of "The Real Florida"

On May 31, 2006 this 5,067 acre parcel of land was purchased from the Overstreet Family to become Florida’s 160th State Park. This acquisition was a joint purchase between the Southwest Florida Water Management District, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and Polk County Natural Resources Division with the Florida Park Service taking the role as the lead managing agency.

While at Colt Creek State Park we invite you to enjoy numerous recreational opportunities including hiking, horseback riding (with your own horse), biking, picnicking and nature study. For your safety please remain on the marked trails. The entire trail system is approximately 12 miles in length. The Mac Lake Loop Trail (White Blaze Trail) is about 2.2 miles in length and is open to hiking, biking and horseback riding. All other trails are open to hiking and horseback riding only. There are no watering stations or restrooms on the trail so be sure to carry plenty of drinking water as well as sunscreen and insect repellant. A picnic area complete with a 4 table picnic shelter, tables and grills are provided for your picnicking pleasure. Restrooms are wheel chair accessible and have running water with flushable toilets.

Freshwater Fishing is one of the major draws to the park. The park has three freshwater man-made lakes ranging in size from 2 -25 acres. You can fish either from the bank or a small boat such as a canoe, kayak or Jon boat. Boats must be carried to the water and hand launched. Gas powered motors are not permitted however electric trolling motors are. A fishing license is required. A complete list of fishing rules is available at the information kiosk and at the Park Office.
