To celebrate the history of the first documented tarpon caught on a rod-and-reel in “Ding” Darling’s Tarpon Bay in 1885, Doc Ford’s and “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge have partnered to host this inaugural tournament, which promises to be one of the best in this area. Registration is $100 each, 100 percent of which goes to awards. “Ding” Darling Days’ Family Fun Day on Sunday, Oct. 14, kicks off a week of eco-activities with all-free refuge tram tours, live wildlife presentations, hot dogs, kids crafts, and more. Birding, boating, and kayaking tours fill the week with environmental activities for all ages. The 23rd annual celebration ends on Saturday, Oct. 20, with Conservation Art Day, where Federal Duck Stamp Winners, other artists, and a refuge photography tram tour will highlight a day devoted to Jay Norwood Darling’s legacy as the first duck stamp artist and Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist.
