Considering it’s only 13 miles long and two miles wide, Amelia Island, off the coast of north-east Florida, has a surprising amount to tempt visitors. Along with the state’s oldest continuously operating bar, the ‘last Spanish Town in the Western Hemisphere’ and years of history from Timucuan Indians to pirates, it’s one of the few places you can head out on horseback along the miles of peaceful beach.
In the heart of a 200 acre reserve, you can see dolphins, seabirds and a range of wildlife in the clear water of the barrier island on a ride from the Kelly Seahorse Ranch
The 45-minute ride within the Amelia Island State Park is led by trained guides, and the placid horses mean it’s a perfect way for novices to enjoy the peaceful scenery along the Atlantic coast, which is also home to manatees and sea turtles. And apart from the romance of trotting by the shore as sun sets, it’s perfect for pondering the area’s history, where eight different flags have flown over the centuries.
To give yourself plenty to think about, fit in a trip to the Museum of History beforehand, as well as discovering the Victorian-era architecture in the historic district of Fernandina Beach seaport.
