In 2005, I moved from Ohio to Tampa Bay for a year... until I fell in love with my husband, guava pastries and 70-degree weather on Christmas. I've been here ever since, working as a journalist and moonlighting as a bargain hunter. My favorite four-letter word is "deal," so whether you've got money to burn or a pocket full of sunshine, I'll share the tips that'll get you more Florida for less.

Happy Memorial Day weekend! Through 9/3, military families get free admission to 1,500 museums nationwide! Pass it on! http://t.co/12AasnQP

Feel the Burn, Then Enjoy the View: Climbing Ponce Inlet Lighthouse

February 06, 2012

Smart Travel means working in a bit of exercise during your vacation. And believe me – after Hubby and I binged on marshmallows and chocolate in Daytona Beach Shores, we were due for some cardio.

As luck would have it, the next morning our itinerary had us at the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse and Museum in nearby Ponce Inlet. At 175 feet, it holds the title of Florida's tallest lighthouse. And with 203 steps to the top, it had us feeling the burn!

But don't be intimidated; the climb is totally doable, even for kids. To give you an idea, Hubby's not crazy about heights, and I'm pregnant... and we both made it to the top! The view is worth it.

While you're on the property, be sure to check out the various exhibit buildings, watch the short video and browse the gift shop. I couldn't resist buying an "I'm a Keeper" onesie for my upcoming bundle of joy.

Ponce Inlet Lighthouse and Museum is open daily (except Thanksgiving and Christmas). Admission is $5 for adults and $1.50 for kids 11 and under.

For details, call 386-761-1821 or visit PonceInlet.org. While you're there, print a coupon for 10 percent off admission!
