I'm a freelance writer and videographer, and spend most of my days exploring Florida's natural wonders from a kayak, a bike or rambling down a hiking trail. A Florida native living in Citrus County, you'll often find me watching the boats go by on the Homosassa River. The view from the El Governor Credit: Kevin Mims
I may have just found my new favorite beach town.
I'm staying at the El Governor Motel, which overlooks the Gulf of Mexico. And when I mean it overlooks the Gulf -I mean that the view from my room feels like I'm almost floating over the beach. I'm pretty sure that there's not too many places in Florida that are this close to three miles to white sandy beaches. I'm totally diggin' it.
I spent a good while on the beach today again, walking down to the fishing pier where folks were collected at the furthest end. Several people were surf fishing, and there were lots of families out swimming, relaxing and boating. Oh, I saw the most spectacular sunset that I've seen on this whole trip right from my balcony - it was incredible! After the sun went down, it was off to Toucan's, which is part restaurant, part tiki lounge, and they even have a playground in the back right on the beach. A huge portion of gulf shrimp and bay scallops completed the evening, and now I'm ready to get some sleep - balcony door open, with the sound of the Gulf of Mexico filling the room.
If you haven't been to Mexico Beach, make plans to spend some time here! I love it, and I think you will too.Â

I'm kind of partial to Cape San Blas. But all of those spots up there are special.
