I'm a freelance writer and videographer, and spend most of my days exploring Florida's natural wonders from a kayak, a bike or rambling down a hiking trail. A Florida native living in Citrus County, you'll often find me watching the boats go by on the Homosassa River. I'm always sharing stories, photos and videos, so follow along and together we'll discover Florida's natural treasures.

It's getting close, ladies and gents. Close to that day where so many struggle to find the right gift or to say just the right things. Some cook meals and lay down rose petal trails all over their homes, others buy boxes of candy and 10-karat gold pendants that are heart-shaped. Yep, millions of men and women do this every year, and I bet more than a few buy the same exact items the next time the day comes around.
I suppose this is just fine and dandy for a lot of folks out there, but perhaps it's time to forget the standard chocolate and jewels thing and really surprise that special someone in your life with something that might be a little more heartfelt. This means spending time with each other (uh oh) in an environment that blends elements of romance and outdoor adventure. That's right, my friends. It's time to get outside!
I've got three good ideas to get the ol' romance gear in your mind going, feel free to adapt these to fit your personal lifestyle and interests. Remember, it's Valentine's Day, so make sure it's something that the both of you might enjoy. Here we go:
Stroll in the Gardens - Let's start off with something slow and relaxing. A walk in a garden setting definitely is romantic, and is the perfect setting for some Valentine's Day snapshots. Take a trip to R.F. Orchids in Homestead, where you can spend some time touring the private orchid gardens. Afterward, you can purchase an orchid to take home, serving as a reminder of your great day in this exotic setting. In Lake Wales, visit Bok Tower Gardens where beautiful landscaping flank the 205-foot pink marble singing carillon. It's a National Historic Landmark, and is a gorgeous place to spend the day.
Take a Paddle - Perhaps a little more adventure is in order, and that's where a kayaking trip come in. Rent a double kayak and hit the water at Honeymoon Island State Park (sounds romantic, doesn't it) near Dunedin, or at Amelia Island State Park near Jacksonville. Both places are incredible, and afterward grab a casual bite to eat to round out this romantic adventure.
Get Running - For active couples, kick things up a notch on Valentine's Day and participate in the Chilly Willy Duathlon at Fort DeSoto Park in St. Petersburg. A 5K run, 10-mile bike, and another 5K run afterward makes for awesome V-Day memories. There's even a couples division! For the ultimate outdoor adventure, challenge yourselves at WeCeFAR's Swamp Stomp 30-hour adventure race. There's also a six-hour version for those who just want to get a little taste of the adventure. Both WeCeFAR races are held on Feb. 13, leaving Valentine's Day open for rest and relaxation.
There you have it, some great outdoorsy ideas for Valentine's Day. Skip the box of chocolates and go have some fun!
