Outdoors & Nature Insider

Kevin Mims

I'm a freelance writer and videographer, and spend most of my days exploring Florida's natural wonders from a kayak, a bike or rambling down a hiking trail. A Florida native living in Citrus County, you'll often find me watching the boats go by on the Homosassa River. I'm always sharing stories, photos and videos, so follow along and together we'll discover Florida's natural treasures.

Labor Day Outdoor Ideas

August 31, 2009

Well, Labor Day is right around the corner, and I know all of you are planning that last big summer weekend outing, right?

I like to use the Labor Day weekend to prep up for Florida hiking season, which kicks off when the weather starts to cool down in October. I typically hike year 'round, but in the cooler months you can go farther, faster, and be a lot more comfortable.

What about you? Got big plans? Well, if you haven't decided what to do yet, here are a few ideas that will have you grabbing your car keys and setting out for an adventure!

Take a Hike

It's still a little warm outside, but short summer hikes are always a great way to get in some exercise and see what makes Florida such a special place. Torreya State Park offers hikers a challenge with about 12 miles of scenic trails, situated in two loops. The trail rises above the Apalachicola River, offering a sweeping vista of the surrounding area.

Paddle the Day Away

Ahh, the Rainbow River, one of Florida's most beautiful waterways. It's the perfect place for a kayak trip or a lazy tube trip on a hot summer day. Head out to Rainbow Springs State Park and enjoy some fun in the sun. Don't have a kayak or canoe? Don't worry - rentals are available at the headsprings. For tubers, the launch point is located on SW 180th Avenue Road. Make sure and check out the Web site for all the details.

Stroll around the Gardens

I've recently blogged about my trip inside Bok Tower in Lake Wales, but equally as dramatic and breathtaking are the gardens that surround it. It's the perfect trip for couples and families looking for a peaceful outing. While at Bok Tower Gardens, consider a tour of Pinewood Estate, an incredible 1930s mansion that's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. After all that, stop in at the Blue Palmetto Cafe for a light lunch or snack. That's a great trip!
