I'm a freelance writer and videographer, and spend most of my days exploring Florida's natural wonders from a kayak, a bike or rambling down a hiking trail. A Florida native living in Citrus County, you'll often find me watching the boats go by on the Homosassa River. I'm always sharing stories, photos and videos, so follow along and together we'll discover Florida's natural treasures.

Gamble Rogers Memorial State Rec Area Credit: Kevin Mims
This is actually my first beach trip of the summer! I've been too busy lately stomping around in the woods to make it over to the coast.Â
If you are looking for an uncrowded stretch of ocean at Flagler Beach, you have to head over to Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area. There's a $5 fee to park and access the beach, but it's well worth it. Great facilities, a covered picnic area and a great boardwalk make this a good place to hang out for the day.
I tend to gear up like I'm going out into the backcountry instead of the beach, so I don't have a cool oceanside cabana to get out of the sun. What did I do? Well, I pulled out a poncho that also serves as a lightweight shelter, grabbed my trekking poles and whammo! One improvised beach tent was set up and my pasty complexion got some relief from the sun. Always be prepared, folks!
If a day trip is not enough, Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area also offers campsites with direct beach access. The campground books up fast, so if you are planning a trip make sure to reserve your spots several months in advance. In addition to the beach area, you can partake in a shady picnic, launch a boat or take a nature walk on the Intercoastal Waterway side of the park. Be sure to check that side out too!
I've got a short 45-second video of the beach area too; click here to check that out.
Until next time, have fun exploring the natural side of Florida!
