I'm a freelance writer and videographer, and spend most of my days exploring Florida's natural wonders from a kayak, a bike or rambling down a hiking trail. A Florida native living in Citrus County, you'll often find me watching the boats go by on the Homosassa River. I'm always sharing stories, photos and videos, so follow along and together we'll discover Florida's natural treasures.

Have you ever paddled through glowing waters? Well, at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, you can do just that!
In the summer months when the water is warmer, Mosquito Lagoon is the place to be at night. Forget going clubbin' on the weekends, get out on the water for a light show like no other! The phenomenon is known as bioluminescence, where light is produced naturally from living organisms such as jellyfish, and bacteria. Any movement against the water causes the water to glow. It's like something out of a fantasy movie! Your kayak and paddle will cause glowing streaks, and the schools of mullet resemble small blue comets as they race through the water.
Ready to experience bioluminescent kayaking for yourself? Take a "Cold Light, Dark Night" trip with A Day Away Kayak Tours in Titusville. Oh, and by the way, it's not called Mosquito Lagoon for nothing - make sure to bring insect repellent. For summer paddling and camping trips like these, I always like to add in a little extra protection with insect-shielded apparel. More on insect gear in a later blog post!
Get on out to Titusville and check out the natural light show - you'll love it!
