A native Floridian, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else but here in Madison County, sharing my knowledge of the best greens in the world. When I'm not writing or hitting the links, I enjoy cruising the back roads on my Softail, looking for a barbecue joint or a conch steak sandwich. So, if you're looking for Florida golf tips and trips, and a little irreverence along the way - sing to me, baby!

For a long time, the image of a group of businessmen on the golf course, smoking cigars, cracking jokes and making big-money deals was ubiquitous.

Well, it still is sort of, but now more and more women are getting in on the action, if not the cigar smoking.

To a large degree, women can thank the Executive Women's Golf Association, the Florida not-for-profit organization.

The EWGA has been around since the early 1990s with a goal of getting "current and aspiring business and professional women to learn, connect and play through golf," in the organization's own words.

The organization just won first place in the Player Development category at the 19th annual ING Industry honors awards programs. The awards were handed out at the most recent PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando.

It was praised for bringing together more than 100,000 women through golf, offering things like ongoing education and training to improve their game and careers, as well as travel and equipment discounts.

"At its core, golf is a social sport that that connects people," EWGA CEO Pam Swenson said at the awards event. "It's a great honor to be recognized for harnessing that power among working women, knowing it helps in keeping them in the game longer, and providing a platform of mentorship and support for golf's next generation."

Headquartered in Palm Beach Gardens, the EWGA is the largest women-focused, amateur golf association in the U.S. They also have chapters in Canada and Europe.

So, if you're a female golfer – or want to be – and also in the business world, you might want to consider joining. Don't worry if you're a beginner or have never played the game; they'll teach you and they have different flights for all skill levels.
