A native Floridian, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else but here in Madison County, sharing my knowledge of the best greens in the world. When I'm not writing or hitting the links, I enjoy cruising the back roads on my Softail, looking for a barbecue joint or a conch steak sandwich. Miami Shores Country Club Goes Public

October 05, 2009

Want to play a round of golf at one of South Florida's oldest and most exclusive country clubs?

Well then, scoot over to Miami Shores Country Club, but leave your tank top, T-shirts and flip-flops at home.

The 70-year-old club has gone public after many years of exclusivity, but it still insists on a certain decorum.

The club's golf course has been public for two decades, but now the public can have many of the privileges only members have traditionally enjoyed.

Yes, the economy is mostly the reason for the change in policy, but the club is better off than some others in South Florida that have been forced to fold.

And officials at the country club say they are excited about the change.

"We should have done this years ago," General Manager Alberto Pozzi told the Biscayne Times. "There are a lot of people who never set foot in here, and that includes Miami Shores residents."

The golf course is a Red Lawrence design built in 1939. It has the sort of length – only 6,373 yards from the back tees – that was normal for courses of that era.

Green fees and cart are normally in the $60 range, but now through October, the club is offering $35 for a round that includes cart, a bucket of balls, lunch and two-for-one drinks.
