The Hombre Golf Club in Panama City Beach is a fun little layout in several different ways, but the greens may be the best thing about it.

The greens at the near-Gulf-front course, which is running some good specials these days, are multi-leveled with ridges, valleys and slopes running through them. They are a blast to putt on, straddling that perfect line between fun and challenging and just plain unfair.

It's a nice place to play in the summer, or early fall, because there is usually a cooling breeze blowing off the Gulf. With its tight fairways, Hombre is a shot-makers course, so use your driver sparingly unless you really trust it.

Hombre is the annual host of the PGA Tour qualifying School and you can play the 27 holes in three different 18-hole combinations. There is water on most of the holes, 21 to be exact. Officials did a dramatic renovation several years ago, with excellent results; it is a beautifully landscaped track.

The Edgewater Beach and Golf Resort has a Golf Getaway for Two that includes two nights in a golf villa, two rounds of golf at Hombre with cart and range balls. And yes there is such a thing as a free lunch, as well.
