Tim McDonald

A native Floridian, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else but here in Madison County, sharing my knowledge of the best greens in the world. When I'm not writing or hitting the links, I enjoy cruising the back roads on my Softail, looking for a barbecue joint or a conch steak sandwich. So, if you're looking for Florida golf tips and trips, and a little irreverence along the way - sing to me, baby!

The Three Masters of Orlando's Ginn Reunion Resort

July 28, 2009

For years, the Reunion Resort has been a favored Orlando stop for golfers, based primarily on the quality of the resort's three courses.

The Legacy, Traditional and Independence courses were designed by Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson respectively, and they are all exceedingly well-groomed and interesting layouts, showcasing the design strengths of their famous architects.

That's why one of the resort's summer specials should be enticing to golfers. Through Sept. 30, foursomes can get unlimited golf – with certain restrictions – and a three-bedroom deluxe villa for $119 a night.

For that price, one guy can sleep on the sofa. Maybe the high scorer for the day?

The unlimited golf means a foursome can take advantage of replays on the course it plays that day, if there is availability. Other restrictions might apply, so it would be wise to check with the resort first, at (888) 418-9611 or here on the Internet.

The Independence course was Watson's first design in Florida and has a British feel. And as we know, Watson likes that British feel, having just come close to winning the British Open a sixth time.

Palmer's Legacy course looks almost like a painting, but a painting that moves -- the terrain dips and swoops, with up to 50 feet in elevation changes.

The Nicklaus course lacks the hills of the other two tracks. It's more of a classic, parkland layout with Nicklaus trying to lull you into pretending you're on the PGA Tour, with a tricky bag of risk/reward options.

All three are worth all-day plays.
