Meet the New Baby White Rhino at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay

Look what’s new at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay! It’s a baby white rhinoceros! She weighed at an estimated 100 pounds and was born on Wed., Nov. 11, 2009. She doesn’t have a name yet, but I’ll keep you posted.

This is really exciting news because according to the International Rhino Foundation (IRF), just over 14,530 white rhinos remain in the wild, and fewer than 170 live in zoological facilities across North America.

This is the fourth calf born to mother Mlaleni and father Tambo here at Busch Gardens. Mlelani, Tambo and another female white rhino were lucky enough to be airlifted from Kruger National Park in South Africa in 2001 through the efforts of the IRF. Â
