We hit the road when the school bell rings to explore everything from citrus tours and sandy shores to toddler-friendly fun and teen-approved thrills. If you're looking for the perfect Florida for your family, you'll find hundreds of ideas right here - from a mom who knows.

Safety Tips for a Happy and Safe Halloween

October 29, 2009

With Halloween falling on a Saturday this year, there are sure to be plenty of festivities going on in practically every neighborhood around the state. And there are definitely things we can all do to keep our kids safe so that everyone has a FUN and HAPPY Halloween:

  • Kids can help carve Jack-O-Lanterns but don't let them use sharp knives. Purchase a kit with kid-friendly tools. (And save those pumpkin seeds, they're healthy and nutritious!)
  • Watch out for trick-or-treaters while driving through neighborhoods. Kids are too busy thinking about candy to watch for cars so everyone needs to be on alert.
  • Have your kids carry a flashlight or glow light. Reflective tape on shoes and candy bags is also a great idea. Since many costumes are dark in color, they are difficult for drivers to see. Light them up!
  • Inspect your kids' candy before they attack it. Be sure to throw out any opened wrappers.
  • If your child is younger (like one of mine) be sure to discard hard candies and other choking hazards.
  • If it's warm out and your kids are in hot fuzzy costumes, don't let them overheat. Carry water and even a T-shirt they can change into if necessary.
  • Be sure their costumes fit correctly as well and there are not pieces they can trip over.
  • It may be obvious, but don't let your kids trick or treat alone. Even older ones should travel in groups.
  • Pepto Bismol and Tums are great for tummy aches!

From my family to yours, I wish you a boo-ti-ful Halloween. Happy Hauntings everyone! Be safe!
